I've not been into gaming for years, I used to play a lot of CS1.6, to give you an idea...

Anyway, got a PC that could cope with some newer games, so after something to get me back into it.

Never really liked games like MGS or MK, was more into HL and CS etc.

PC is a i7 4790, 24GB RAM, 750Ti.

I'm also looking for modern versions of TTDX (legendary!), civilisation etc

Steam was a PoS back in the day, I've looked at a lot of games are on it now. Better, or just forced down your throat?

Steam in my opinion has been one of the greatest things ever done for PC gaming.

Nope pretty awesome now, even if you don't buy the games on their you can still see what has good player reviews etc, its a big community now. The way that console content is now done is based on Steam, basically everyone is copying steam.

I used to play CS1.6 and remember when steam first came out and it was a bag of ste, install it, see what you think, you can always uninstall it again. If you played 1.6 you will have a steam account, people still play CS1.6

OpenTTD is TTDX with 32bpp graphics (still same view but much shinier and detailed graphics)

https://www.openttd.org/en/

To get the 32bpp sprites, you can download it via the addins in options

If you enjoyed Half Life have a look at Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas.

Try the new Beyond earth, or jump sid m's ship all together and try the wonderful beautiful looking endless legend or endless space. A lot of indie 4x games about right now that hit the sweet turn based strategy spot.

If you feel like torture the latest xcom and expansion enemy within will do just fine.
