After backing out of the mk2 deal, I've picked up a LHD mk1 - and its brilliant! Its virtually unused at 2k miles and feels brand new.

Now for booking all those trackdays.....

Initial impressions compared to my 993 (Still miss that shape!) are that its incredible engine - and "on rails" cornering.

Cheers

VS - yes, the 993 will be sorely missed. I really gelled with it and thought i'd keep it forever...

Its arctic silver, comfort version - with a roll cage and harnesses about to go in.

Pix soon!

Peter - any thoughts on LHD driving in the Uk? From a short drive, i dont think its an issue. i do find myself driving closer to the kerb than in a rhd car, but i'm sure after a while, i won't even think about it. I've driven lhd cars all over the US and Europe and its easy to adapt very quickly.

Anyone else had experience? (practical issues like car parks and drive thrus apart)

Cheers

I find that there are just as many places i can overtake (when the need arises) because i can see in my LHD where i wouldn't be able to in RHD - so no difference there...

You can pull up next to a pretty lady at the traffic lights and she doesn't have to shout to tell you she likes your car... you're sitting right next to her

Car parks are a pain. Grrr.

Much safer getting out on the pavement side if you have to park on a busy street...

As you say, you tend to drive closer to the kerb. One advantage is on narrow roads, when squeezing past oncoming traffic you can position yourself much easier relative to hedges and kerbs. Reduced risk of kerbing a wheel aswell.

Anyway, it's a good excuse to go on driving holidays in Europe to make the most of your LHD car!

Its not really an issue on longer drives either.

I suppose on a long stright narrow road visibility can be awkward if overtaking a lorry. But as long as you hang well back then blast past, you wont have a problem. The car is so damn fast it wont take long.

I found myself struggling with the gears for the first couple fo days. On the track (two days later) within one lap I was comfortable.

Plus on track I find LHD to be much better anyway. (depends on the circuit I suppose, but I go to Bedford most often, where there are mainly lefthanders.)

Plus in traffic, people seem more inclined to chat about the car.! I found that compared to my rhd 996 C2, I get a much more positive reaction from people on the road (except in the S.E. of course, where most people are nasty jealous chavs).
I think its the fact that even a layman can see the cage and harnesses and they recognize that you're an enthusiast , not a poseur.

on top of that no-one f**ks with you. (if you pardon my french)

Hey Ajit - congratulations!!
Too bad about the mk2 but at least you found out BEFORE you handed over any money! (Still cant belive you sold that 993 tho!!!)

You'll quickly get used to LHD - I used to have a E30 M3 and never found any problems except car parks and toll roads (interesting going to dover every weekend over the QE bridge - never missed a thrown £1!!)

You'll also find that driving LHD on country roads enable you to look 'inside' the line of traffic for overtaking opportunities.

Look forward to the pics

Its a brilliant car and will probably hold its value better than the mk2 with only 1800made (biggest reason for me when buying). I bought an mk1 at a large Porsche dealer a while ago, year 2001 with only 4800 km.

Cheers guys.

Surj - I still have to pinch myself that the 993's gone, doesn't help when i have a photo of "us" in action at Donnington last yr.

Talking of trackdays, is anyone doing the Porsche only day on Good Friday at Bedford organised by fastrak? 199 notes.

Now if i can get all these blessed tax returs out of the way, maybe i could go for a blast tomorrow....
