She likes a datejust style piece loosely speaking, perhaps mens, but 40mm too big on her delicate wrist.

Budget is 250 to 500 at a push.

Want to find a mechanical windup rather than quartz, I know auto is out of reach.

New or vintage is fine.

I know there are some very clued up types on here, any hopes of inspiration?

Over.

Quartz and below budget, but Rotary do some nice ladies mid-size date-just style watches. Mrs FarQue currently wears a stainles/rose-gold (coloured) example that only cost £150. Fabulous thing for the money.

Within your budget I'd say that all three are easily obtainable, I'd also question why you're ruling out quartz. Unless she has a particular desire to avoid them quartz are generally more accurate and easier to live with, no daily hand winding or watch stopping and having to be reset if not worn for a day or two. Please forgive me if your daughter does, but is she even aware of the differences?

Here's a starter for 10, an auto Hamilton

Or how about something like this

Thanks so far guys, interesting. Old-school mechanical is desired over quartz for its 'specialness' even given the budget constraints. This watch is intended to hang around a long time and remain a lasting memento IYSWIM.

Yes, she does know the difference and wants mechanical if possible. smile

Depending on which end of your price bracket you'd rather be at, Seiko and Creation Watches might be your friend. Take an eyeball at the range here, for example: http://www.creationwatches.com/products/seiko-wome...

Some are close to the Datejust style, some might provide inspiration. Many, but not all, are mechanical. I suggest this because i was recently asked for suggestions for my 18 year old niece, but on a tighter budget. I went for this one: http://www.creationwatches.com/products/seiko-japa...

She loved it, cementing my position as favourite (albeit only) uncle. I've used Creation twice without issue, as have quite a few others on here i believe.

Thanks Snubs, good call. Really like the look of the Lukia 008. Strong contender right there.

Look on Chrono24. Get a watch from the year she was born. ( Possibility of NOS)

Get a good indie to service it.

Robert is your mother's brother.

I just finished uni, with a housemate that's pretty into her brands and fashion, loves rose gold watches. When buying for my girlfriend, I wanted something classic and not covered in tacky diamonties whilst being slim as not to drown her wrist and make her look like snoop dog. Settled for a STORM, decent price and slim. Ended up going for http://www.watchshop.com//ladies-storm-slim-x-watc...

Trying to google and finding a wind-up seems tricky at the highstreet jewelers, perhaps something like:
http://www.stormwatches.com/watches/womens/sorena-...

As a side note my girlfriend liked her rose gold so much she got one for her sister whom mentioned she liked it. I dunno your daughters style but they seems pretty "in" at the moment.

Look at the mens too, as they aren't all particularly large. I have Omega, Oris, Rolex, Tissot, Maurice Larcoix, Rado, Heuer, TAG Heuer, Poljot and Breitling watches and I am definitely looking to buy a Hamilton next.

I think the obvious answer here is a used Tudor oyster date.
For example...

The case is made by Rolex, but the movement is a ETA rather than an in house Rolex. A ladies one should be available with very little budget creep.
