Well, the Transport Implementation Committee met to "consider" the objections to the raft of new 50mph limits.

There were 11 letters in favour of the new limits. 31 against.

So, of course, the new limits will be imposed. Watch for talivanic vultures as soon as the signs are slapped up.

And there are 4-5 more limits that will be "consulted on" come June/July this year. Anyone fancy betting the "consultation" will reflect the democratic process in the same way that this did?

These 50s are in addition to the raft of 40s and 30s that are now appearing. Soon the county won't have a road with an NSL and pedestrians will be getting nicked for walking too fast. Oxfordshire County Council have already banned running with scissors.

If so, I guess this is typical of camera organisations' idea of a democracy.

I'm sure the official story will be that the tax helps the NHS, because.. err.. money was missing.. er because they spent it all on the latest war.

Well I've written to them - told them I won't be visiting Oxon again (I live within a mile of it's borders).

Surely the solution is for someone from Oxfordshire to challenge the decision?

Surely some kind of explanation is required as to why the decision was made given the clear opposition from correspondance received?

If they say people's protests don't matter then surely the Council's consultation process itself is pointless and *that* should be a concern to both the people and newsmedia of Oxon?

They say so openly on radio interviews. On Fox FM, a leading dim light on the Council was invited to comment on the wider consultation for the next batch of Gatspoxfordshire's anti-car initiatives, and said something like how they were keen to receive input but wouldn't necessarily take any notice of it. They're quite brazen about their arrogance and detachment from reality in Morse country.

All I received was a short e-mail stating:

"After careful consideration of the report and all comments received, councillors decided when they met last Thursday that the speed limits should go ahead as
proposed."

Careful consideration? Yeah, right.

Barrell has referred (though not in print) to the ludicrous 30mph limits springing up everywhere as "Turkey thirty" limits. So it's obvious that there is discord in the County Council. But no-one will dare to throw out these stupid tree-huggers' ideas and restore the highways to the standards of even a few years ago.
