North Wales roads advice!

I am planning a drive from Chester to BetsY-Coed to Portmadog then up to Caernarfon. Something twisty but won't take forever, I am sure you are all familar with this route any pointers as to what roads I should take? Thanks in advance!

Just head across the Denbigh moors, I seem to recall that being a hoot.

Failing that, the main A494 I think it is - has some good bits on it too, altho traffic can slow progress.
