My car has just been delivered back from the dealer today after having its MOT and three year check. I have been offered the extended warranty for either one or two years but before I commit I thought it best to see what experiences people have had claiming under the extended warranty. I have found the manufacturers warranty to be excellent but am sure I read that extended warranties don't offer anywhere near the same cover, is this correct?

What are they quoting?

A friend claimed for a new rear light (condensation), replaced without any hassle...

Not sure how hard it would have been had something more serious gone 'pop'!

Hi, out of interest, are we talking extended manufactures warranty or 3rd party warranty ?

The extended manufacturer warranty is a 3rd party one unless you've bought an approved used car from an official dealer.

Had been assured that the coverage will be almost the same as the manufacturer one but... the acid test is if something major breaks I suppose and in some respects I'd rather that not happen warranty or otherwise. Have had a small issue with the door card sorted under warranty though without any fuss.

Warranty offered by McLaren dealer who were the original supplier of the car.

was almost in a position where I had to make a claim, looked like a new gearbox, they sorted it immediately, after investigative work, turns out it was a simple issue, no claim required.

For me, I think its a must, and it would have worked for me.

I have had no other warranty issues, but as an insurance, I would take it.

I stress, nothing was wrong with my car, gearbox had been over filled, looked like an oil leak, it wasn't.

That's funny. At my second service they were talking about having to replace the gearbox, that also turned out to have been over filled (by them I presume) and not necessary.
Think I will call today and extend the warranty as I am sure it will help with resale if I decide to sell the car shortly.

As I am sure you are aware the warranty is only transferable if you sell privately, if you SOR through a Mclaren dealer then it will have to be renewed so just bear in mind how you intend to market the car.

SOR the warranty is still transferable afaik as it's an individual selling to another. Only if a dealer actually buys your car and resells it then it's not.
