Anyone use them to replace a normal hard wired phone?

I currently have 3 lines at home ( home, business and business fax) plus broadband.

now as im moving im looking at alternatives. vonage.co.uk seem to offer a reasonable deal ( anyone heard of them)

i could just go to a single bt line plus adsl ( dont worry i'll not buy the adsl from bt but i will need a bt line to get it. i could stick with telewest cable but i want fixed ip and the best deal for that seems to be zenadsl)

and then take the vonage business package for 18.99 which gives a phone number and a fax number and inclusive uk landline calls. they dont use voip phones just and adaptor that plugs into your adsl line.

the uk dialing codes are a bit limited so i'd have to have a bham number 0121 rather than a kidderminster 01562, but i could have an additional number say new york for another 2.99pcm

ANyone tried it or come up with any alternatives?

plus is there away to get a bt line without buying it from bt. There is a company that advertise on here but i think its only london thats unbundled the local loop so far

cheers

Graham,

I have just looked at the Vonage website and it looks pretty good, this whole area really interests me because I get loads of free minutes on my mobile and I just want a land line for people to call.

Does anyone have any more suggestions on the whole 'broadband' phone thing?

Cheers

John

I have just signed up with Vonage - waiting for my kit to be delivered. Some goodfriends of mine in the USA absolutely swear by their Vonage broandband phone. Me getting one here not only gets me unlimited free UK calls for £9.99 a month (I don't care about the 020 number as I'll still have my regular phone for the time being) plus I get free calls to my friends in the USA as they are Vonage customers. Elsewhere it's 2p a minute to the USA.

Free voicemail, call ID etc etc etc all means it's a no brainer for me.

Yes, I don't see why not. Best check with Vonage.I will be using it over ADSL as I don't have cable here. I don't know what sort of data rates it needs but it may be worth bearing in mind that cable's upstream speed is 128kbit/s compared with ADSL's 288kbit/s. Doubt it'll be using anything like 128kbit/s though to be honest.

Cheers Roop, I have to say it looks pretty good, they offer a 14 day trial so I suppose that I don't have anything to lose..

Can you still use your broadband connection at the same time?

Yes, your bandwidth is shared between the computer and phone line.

Well they didnt come up in my googling yesterday

Im still 50/50 on vonage as it is very new. also reading the small print there is a 16.99 connection fee plus a fiver for delivery and after 14 days there is a 23.99 cancellation fee. but at least there is no long term contract.

Watch the 14 day money back guarantee as you have to get the equipment back to them in that time too.

Its a pity you cant use an ip phone either

try skype.com, totally free internet to internet calls (i.e. PC to PC) and can call landlines anywhere in europe,US and australia, anytime 1.1p / min and works really well.

I got my Vonage phone installed yesterday and it rocks, very pleased. No delay at all, quality perfect - no problem in calling friends in Cheltenham and similarly friends in the USA. Excellent stuff.

I used skype to call my girlfriend's mobile in the USA last night. 1.14p/min, fantastic call quality (better than my landline, though that may be to do with the quality of my laptop's speakers) and very easy to use. No contract, I just bought a few pounds of credit and tried it out. I recommend it to anyone - calls to other skype users are free, anywhere in the world at any time!

I'm ordering the vonage home package today and will let you know how I get on. I think I can save a lot of money and intend to have my landline removed.

roop, am I correct in thinking that I can discard by BT/NTL phone line once I have vonage as I don't want to continue paying line rental for a phone service I don't use?

Cheers.

Hi Roadie,

Provided you still have your broadband connection then yes, you can discard the phone line. Remember, if you use ADSL broadband (ie: anything other than NTL or Telewest cable) then you still need your phone line.

Hope this helps...!

I am about to make my unit wireless - I have sort of backwards engineered it into my ADSL/WiFi system - great fun...!

Hi Graham,

I ordered 30th January and it arrived on 3rd Feb. Perhaps give Vonage a buzz...? As an aside, mine was delivered without a signature required and was left by the front door, so the courier might have stuck it under a side gate or some similar if you weren't in. Have a check.
