Well it turned out to be a good decision to go to BBWF anyway, despite the spectre of the cutting-out phenomenon coming and going. About half way there going up the A14 it started misbehaving again, and when I was struggling to get past lorries it was time to stop! So I pulled over into a handy side road and stopped the car. I left the ignition on and when I popped the bonnet there was a tell-tale "click" from the injectors.

So I started looking at the throttle pot connector and my eye followed the wires under the throttle bracket - three bare wires! They had obviously been chafing against the bracket for years and eventually all the insulation was gone, so they were shorting to the engine, and each other.

A couple of minutes with some insulating tape and all is well, on the way home no funny losses of power. I'll be putting a plastic guard under that bracket to stop it happening again. Another small improvement made to the SX engineering package.
