My mum and dad were going to buy a Hard disk recorder to record the stuff they might miss.

With an unlimited BT Infinity contract I think a smart TV solution (iPlayer, All4 etc.) would be best and cheapest option.

They have no network in the house so need to go WiFi but have a very strong signal in the living room so should be fine.

Unfortunately their TV has no smart features so I'm guessing either a WiFi enabled blu ray player or something else that's easy to use. I was thinking Chromecast but does that stream from other devices only? They basically need the simplest way to access catch up TV.

Best way forward?

Run an ethernet cable from the TV to the router, and sign up for BT TV.

The BT box works as a freeview PVR with catch up features. If they have ipads/tablets they operate the box via them too. If the ethernet cable is a no go then get a powerline unit.

Having hard drives/nas units dongles everywhere is not the way to go with parents.
You will end up being called constantly for the first week when they cant operate or record anything and then after a month they will never use it as they are too afraid to ask.

Having fitted many bits of kit for customers, trust me, simple is best!

I don't know if it's an additional cost item but my daughter has a couple of BT branded ethernet over mains adapters which were fitted when she switched to BT Infinity with the TV package.
