Aston Martin were recommending Castrol Edge 10/60.

My dealer recently filled with Mobil 1 10/60.

Have Aston now changed their favourite oil supplier?

A slight nuisance, because I already have Castrol for top-up, and we are told (who knows if it is true) not to mix.

They recently changed their oil supplier in N America, can't speak for elsewhere. Not sure why it'd be a problem to mix - usually that's only the case with things like coolant. Can't say I've heard of that being an issue with engine oil.

Never heard of a Mobil 1 10/60. They only go up to 50 weight I thought, that's why it isn't specified by AM for the V8, only for the V12. Castrol used to make the 10/60 for BMW M motors, but the contract is now with Shell for the 10/60. German Liqui Moly makes a fully compatible 10/60 for M motors and would be another good choice.

Regarding mixing....poppycock. Go right ahead.

I don't have the service details with me, but the Mobil website shows a product title of presumably what has been used.

Mobil 1 Extended Life 10W-60.

Quite surprising that there is a difference in availability of certain Mobil 1 viscosities from US to UK.

The Mobil 1 10-60 is clearly targeted at older/higher mileage engines, which doesn't sound like the right target for the V8V. Although the claimed benefits sound like good things, and it says it's ideal for racing...

From the Mobil website (I added the bold):

Product Description
Mobil 1 is the world’s leading synthetic engine oil brand delivering our ultimate performance and protection.

Mobil 1 Extended Life 10W-60 is engineered for the specific demands of older vehicles.

Features and Potential Benefits
Mobil 1 Extended Life 10W-60 is engineered to help provide long lasting protection in higher mileage engines so you can get long life out of your vehicle.

Extra seal conditioners to help prevent oil leaks
Helps to reduce sludge build up to keep engines clean and prevent wear
Outstanding/Excellent oil film thickness for extra protection in older engines
Higher viscosity to help reduce oil burn off in older engines
More anti-wear additives to help protect worn engines
High performance basestocks for excellent all-round wear protection

Applications
Mobil 1 Extended Life 10W-60 has been designed to help provide the extra protection that older engines can demand. It is suitable for virtually all types of older vehicles and operating conditions.

Older vehicles
Nearly all operating conditions, from mild to extreme
An ideal product for Racing applications
Always consult your owner’s manual to check recommended viscosity grade and specifications for your particular vehicle.

Have any other V8V owners had Mobil 1 oil used by their main dealer, at a recent service?

A.M. specify 10W-60 for the V8 and 0W-40 for the V12. Castrol has been the main brand officially recommended for V8's (Edge Sport or Formula RS) but Mobil 1 has a great reputation for being a top quality oil, so I wouldn't worry. As long as the spec is fully synthetic 10w-60 or 5w-50 meeting spec ACEA A3/B3 you are fine. smile

As long as the SAE rating is correct for the car it matters not one jot which "manufacturer" you use.

I happen to specify Gulf on the recommendation of DAE smile

Mixing synthetic oils of the same viscosity is no issue. Probably one of the best oil (of course there are others as well) you can get for your AML V8 engine is Castrol Edge Prof. TWS 10W60 with BMW M approval. This oil does have a particular additive formula to be used for all aluminum M engines (like M3, M4, M5, etc.) specified upon request of BMW. Every oil does create acids when boiled. Casted engine blocks usually do not have a problem with that but full aluminum engine blocks are quite sensitive regarding oil induced acids. In particular if they are driven only from time to time. There is also a reason why motorcycle manufacturer (motorcycle engine are usually aluminum engines) do recommend to make an oil change before winter storage. Oil acids are one reason...
