Speed 6???

Hi everyone,
I get my first tvr on Wednesday - cerb speed 6,1999, no upgrades (except stereo) 23000miles - 23k.
Been on this site for a few days and have learnt so much from reading your threads - but there doesn't seem to be a lot on the s6 - is there a reason for this? My only two prerequisites before I bought a cerb was that it was a s6 - because if I'm honest wanted more of the entry level cerb, have been advised they had better handling, more of the all rounder, can use it as an everyday car but with 350bhp it was still a beast!! the other one was that it had to be yellow - meant to be faster!!
Went into DreamMachines - who were excellent - better than any car dealers I have been to - but this does seem to be indicative of tvr dealers as a whole, saw the car, took it out, loved it, bought it!

Its just kinda worryin' me that no-one really talks about the s6 - have I bought it for the right reasons? Should I have gone for the 4.2 or 4.5?

Firstly, congratulations!

Certainly more of the people on here have the V8s - I would guess V8 Cerbs have outsold SP6 Cerbs significantly over the Cerb's whole production run.

The AJP V8 and Speed Six are both fine engines, with quite different characters. Apart from a few of the well looked after and fettled V8s, your typical SP6 will produce just as many horses.

I have owned my SP6 from new and have never regretted the choice.

All you're lacking with the SP6 is the pub bragging rights of the extra 2 cylinders........

I suggest you take a look at the Tuscan forum if you want to know more about the S6 engine...but it might not make pleasant reading.

No - it doesn't make great reading at all - 99 model firmly in the "problem bracket" as well - it has a fsh and no history of problems. Mmmmmmmmm.......

Good luck mate... I would have advised a 4.2/4.5 over a speed 6 personally... but if you have a warranty, then thats ok, drive her, enjoy her, and then sell her off before the warranty goes...

Sean, nice car! I was sitting in it the other day, admiring. Lovely halion midas(?), nice interior too Congrats mate!! Just a few more days and shes yours!

But dont for a minute let the others decieve you into believing the yellows arnt the fastest

Chances are, Im a customer of yours, as I also live in Eastbourne! What bars/clubs do you own?

And... I also bought a yellow Cerbera from Dream Machines - last week!! Obviously Im the cerb daddy around town though, coz I was here first and have the 4.5

We are going to have to hook up for a hoon! Nick, about next weekend...

Definitely have to hook up with you Rob - and yes you're still the Daddy!!! (only for a couple more years tho' - then there'll be a new sheriff in town!!
I've just taken on Maxims on South St. - handover on 1st March - shame it hasn't got a car park - could have been a great place to have a south coast meet.
I might have the baby cerb of the family, just 'cos you lot have a couple more cylinders - size doesn't matter - so they keep telling my mate - Ahem!!
As for the cost of maintenance - just part of my cerb initiation I suppose - it'll make me get to know my car!

Warranty isn't likely to cover the majority of S6 engine woes, with them mainly being "wear & tear" issues...

Its only done 23000 mls - so engine's well bedded in but not so much so for too much wear and tear, no history on the engine side either and from an excellent dealership - so I'm thinking this is gonna be a great car to start off my tvr relationship with.

Firstly well done on the purchase, like me, you are new to the TVR mark. I bought the Tuscan S also a speed 6 and was worried about the negative reports. However....read deep and read between the lines and you may come to same conclusion as I. This engine is in a very high state of tune and demands care and attention. It is imperative it is thoroughly warmed up before it is worked hard. Keep an eye on the oil temp, thats the important one, mine runs around 60-70 deg C this time of year when its properly warmed up. If your motor has done 23K with out problems its likely been well looked after. Treat it the same and it will give you some incredible enjoyment, of that I am sure......have fun.

Unfortunately EVO don't know their arse from their elbow when it comes to TVR ownership as they only have cars for a few days at a time - not long enough for anything really drastic to happen. Better to sick with the experiences of the long-term owners on here methinks.

In Evo's Tuscan buyers guide they even had me down as one of the specialists to contact .. go figure .. just a tiny amount of research (like actually talking to me!) would have told them I wouldn't want my name associated with any Tuscan / SP6 buyers guide anywhere!

Unfortunately the Tuscan's habit of breaking down is carried over into the brilliant Cerbera. When they stuck the SP6 into the Cerbie they ruined an excellent car it became a pain to work on (access to regular service items is much more difficult than the V8 version) and the attempt to create a *softer* TVR to appeal to merc and beemer drivers sadly backfired.

I suspect that when PW looks back on his time at TVR the Cerbera SP6 might be his worst moment.

Seriously, it comes down to whatever you fancy at the end of the day.

The Speed Six can be mended should it go pop, so just have deeper pockets ready
than if you were to buy a V8....just in case..
