My wife is due to give birth to our first child in 3 months. Is it strange that although I am not doing anything as she's going to do all the hard work, I am stting it.

I'm worried for my wife and worried for our child. I feel helpless. I struggle with the idea of her being in pain and I won't be able to help if that makes sense...

Any advice?

Nothing can prepare you for it, don't even try! Knowing this I'm constantly staggered at how many couples have more than one child wobble

TX.

Edit - Put it this way, if the human race relied on men to pop the babies out we'd have died out long ago wink

Mines due in 3 weeks, my wife is uncomfortable, hot, swollen and not very happy, I feel fine hehe

On a serious note, it's a hell of a thing to go through, I just hope I can support her enough! I'm pretty squeamish and not really looking forward to being 'there' to witness it!

I'm pretty scared too, I know complications are few and far between but there was a woman she was talking to on facebook who lost their baby at 38 weeks as the placenta stopped working, still have to give birth to the baby frown Uttterly horrible and I can't imagine how you get over that!

Just keep your head up, once the baby has come and your wife starts to get her body back without being kicked in the ribs or bladder it will all be forgotten!!

Yeah I remember bricking myself in the run up to it as well. All I can say is it will all come naturally. Try to remain calm and supportive for your wife. And you will be so knackered you won't have time to worry about the concerns you have at the moment. You'll worry about other stuff of course though!

We've got number two due to arrive beginning of December beer

Thanks chaps

Its a strange feeling to know what your wife/partner will go through and you can't do anything but stand there..

Glad I'm not alone when saying how scared/worried I am...

3 months and I am panicking. 3 weeks I would have baby sweats..

Good luck to all who are expecting!!

6 weeks to go for our second and I'm bricking it too, even though we went through the same thing just over 18 months ago.

It does all come naturally whether you want it to or not, the worrying and helplessness is just part and parcel of it, chances are it'll all be fine but if something doesn't quite go to plan you'll be in good, capable hands.

Best thing is to chill, that'll keep her chilled which gives all three of you the best chance.

All the best to you and the fam anyway OP.

I was like this with my first born. There's not much you can do but nature has a way of sorting things out without any help. I'm sure they'll both be fine and it's just a matter of letting nature take its course.

Fast forward 14 years and my new partner is expecting her first child, my second. It's due between Xmas and New Year. I'm going to be on stand by so the only thing worrying me this time around is that I won't be able to drink over the holidays :-(

Just a word of warning. The toast they bring after your wife has given birth isn't for you, it for your wife. I learnt this the hard way biggrin

I hope you are going on an ante-natal class. Very helpful in getting you and your wife ready. The support group for your Mrs is also invaluable post-baby, and it's nice to go out for a beer and a curry with group of lads who are going through the same issues.

Nothing really can prepare you for it. And you won't be of any use to anyone at the birth.

Do some research on nearby take-away/delivery places - hospital food hasn't got any better since last you tasted it.

Stay away from the business end.

Hope your midwife is more helpful than ours was.

Ended up delivering the little bugger myself, then the placenta!

Good luck and it will be fine.

Just give your wife all the support you can. It is without doubt one of the most defining moments in life when you are there when your first born arrives in the world. I can remember every detail in the 12hrs before and the 24hrs after from 22 years ago but I can't remember what I had for dinner last night! ( I can also remember the details of the two that followed smile)

I have to say that the two weeks after were the most exhausting in my life as you adapt to a whole new way of life.

Don't fret; look forward to the most amazing experience thumbup

My little boy is nearly six months old now. I remember being really worried about everything leading up to the birth - would I be a good dad? Would I drop the baby (now him - we didn't know before)? Would I be able to cope with my wife being in pain so much? How would I deal with going to work on no sleep? Would I ever have money again?

You know what, you can't change what's going to happen so once you stop worrying about all that crap it all gets a bit easier because you accept what is coming. Your wife is a lot tougher than you think - mine was (legendarily she has a 0 pain threshold normally). The first couple of weeks are hard work and then it gets better... If you are lucky your baby will be really interactive from the start. They also let you get lots of laughs over the most minor of things. You'll spend hours trying to make a tiny human giggle and will do anything up to and including driving 40 miles at 3am to stop them crying.

Love them and they love you back!
Me with my little boy at about 2 months old smile

You're gonna hear about this for the rest of your marriage, if I were you I'd start down playing it know, don't let her get the upper hand, it's no worse than doing a big st after abs day at the gym, no where near as bad as passing a kidney stone - that kind of thing.

My advice, stay at the head end (her head) be nice to the midwife, sneak a toot or two on the gas and air and get as much sleep as possible (because you ain't getting any after the thing comes).

If she has some complex birthing plan, wants a birthing pool, home birth, expresses any desire to do anything "naturally", as soon as she's incapable completely ignore and over ride her wishes, she'll hate you for it but the object of this mission is to get the thing out as quickly as possible that's what she needs to she's just got a head full of cotton wool right now. Also your missus is going to go a bit (more) mental for a few weeks (months, years) after the birth so that's a good time to bury any st you don't want her to find and escape to the shed.

good luck.
