Ok it was probably stolen then dumped, all those years ago. So what happens now ? Is anyone really bothered now ? I suppose it will be scrapped, but what a shame when I'm sure enthusiasts if not make it roadworthy could at least salvage rare parts ? What if it were a stolen Testarossa. Would it still be scrapped ?

What parts do you think would be salvageable? The things rusted without being at the bottom of a lake for 20 years. mgtony said:

I've seen a video of someone rescuing a swamp bound split van in Sweden. It had already been stripped over the decades.
But short of getting it out that way, no one had been able to recover it
They had to helicopter it out !! I simply can't see what you could even start with: surely it would be 5% original and everything else new/ found.

It’s a shame the police didn’t catch the pond life behind this at the time, as back in those days, the coppers would have battered them.
If the owner is a Capri enthusiast, he may come to the surface; if he (or she) wants a serious project and wants £15k at the end of the line, then this is quite some bait. Although it’s not really a restoration job, as I’d suspect a lot of new parts would be needed – therefore the originality of the car would be heavily watered-down.
I guess the engine would need some work, as it would have suffered some serious sedimentation. And even if it could be rescued and cleaned, they’d have to take it to an engine tuna to get it running right.
Even if the original owner doesn’t come forth, a celebrity maybe hooked by the history of this car. A celeb with an old sole may want to plaice a bid for it - Nicola Sturgeon? Alex Salmond? Ken Loach? Michael Fish? Rosamund Pike?

The Capri story reminded of the Camaro-in-a-lake story from a couple of years back. A police force in the US state of Oklahoma bought some new toys and tested them out on a nearby lake. And managed to find two submerged cars... Both containing bodies
