Help on buying a Toureg – Engine, Spec, etc. Is an Audi Q5 a
Discussion
The best car I have ever owned, my C63 AMG is on its way out. We’ve just bought a new house in Sussex and I’d like to release some equity so budget for the next purchase is anything up to £20,000. A newborn son with an implausibly wide buggy and a rural location on rutted roads is a further nail in the silver cars coffin.
I quite fancy the BMW X5, Mrs911 is weirdly obsessed with the Skoda Yeti. Is the middle ground perhaps a Volkswagen Toureg?
First question is which engine?:
V10- My best friend used to have the 5.0 V10 Sport which was a mighty beast the way it thrust forward on a wave of torque. His better half now has a V10 non sport and a drive in it the other day was still impressive but not as earth shattering as it once felt. Maybe a hangover from tooling around in the C63. Great engine, many problems with it? Obviously the horrific MPG is something to think about as it’s not much of an improvement on my 6.2.
V6 – The 3.0 V6 in 240 bhp sounds okay, anyone have any experience/advice? Are they all diesel? I’m not sure I would want any less than 240bhp this otherwise you’re really starting to struggle to pull the skin off a tin of Birds.
Next question is what age?:
A quick surf of PH classifieds and Autotrader show that £20k will either get me in a high mile post-facelift or a lower mile post-facelift. It looks like quite a substantial facelift on the body, not to mention the much nicer gearstick and what looks to be a more modern media system (assume touchscreen). Does anyone have any experience of switching from one to the other? How much difference did you notice (imagine I’ll get a fairly biased thumbs up from everyone on this). Has the hardwear been upgraded?
Then spec, are there any must-haves?
I’d like a sunroof, heated seats, satnav and Bluetooth but assume that all of them will come with these. Is there a panoramic sunroof? Is there a sport model or bodykit. Tasty wheels would be nice but not sure I want to go wider than 20”. Adore the way that the R50 looks but can’t afford one anyway!
Finally, the outside option is for an Audi Q5, again 3.0 but my fear is that the boot would be too small for the buggy etc, not to mention the space between the rear bench and front seats to allow fitting the baby seat and the front passenger to still have decent legroom.
Thanks for any tips and hints!

At about 550NM of torque it wont have a problem pulling anything with a 3.0TDI V6 it is registered to tow an additional 3.5tonnes.
Q5 and Touareg are similar, but Q5 is smaller, looks better inside especially.
Running gear is slightly different in Q5, but then you can still get a 2.0tdi (lighter and less requirement for high torque)
Touareg is similar to Q7 (longer) and Cayenne (more choice of engines) as they are all built on same production line in Slovakia.
You will be hard pushed for anything to live up to the C63 AMG, so you will really have to make do.
Why not the Porsche Cayenne?

Ha ha, if she doesn't like the X5 on image grounds, I think you can imagine her reaction to Cayenne!!!Why not the Porsche Cayenne?
I think if we did go for the Q5 (but I think it might be a bit small) then would probably go for the 3.0 V6.
Thanks for your input though.
Just bought a Touareg, 62 plate 45000 miles for 26.5K. It replaced a 100000 miles BMW X5 that we had for 7 tears and was then the best car we ever had, fast(ish) comfortable with a fabulous Panoramic roof and able to respond to any needs like trips to the tip, long journeys with 5 + large dog and luggage aboard etc.
The Touareg has a lot to live up to, but so far it is even better than the X5, faster, more economical and cheaper road tax, a great concern to Mrs S.
Ours is a well specced Altitude 3.0.
Go for it, you won't be sorry.

I have had a 2007 V10 Touareg for 3 years. So far it's had an alternator (£950) and an airpump (£400) I still enjoy driving it.
Really is a great engine.
I see 22-26 mpg. I lent it to a friend of mine who can get 31mpg out of it. Not sure how, he is a vehicle emissions consultant though.
