Idiot question alert-website help

Hi all,
Wifey wants to start selling stuff on line. Food based stuff.
I want a website that promotes and sells on line, as well as a couple of other pages that for in house gourmet dining.
This is a new project, totally in its infancy.
I already have a website that is live and is hosted (is that right terminology?) with just a few bog standard pics on.
How much should I pay for someone to design it and set it up for me? I have no idea and don't want to get ripped off.
Thanks

if selling online - don't spend a fortune, you will take a long time to make it back - start simple and easy by using a hosted system (BigCommerce / Shopify tend to be the main two at the moment) - monthly payment, no technical knowledge needed, you can have pages of static information as well as selling pages - point your current domain at their servers to use your domain...
low cost, risk free way of testing the market
if you start to build your own ecommerce system on your website it WILL cost you a lot more it WILL be a lot more hassle it WON'T be as good
spend low on the software - you get professional systems for not that big a monthly outgoing, then spend your time and money on marketing / social media / advertising / etc. to drive people to the website - that is what will make it work or fail - people actually buying, not the software (assuming a base level of professionalism)
