Hi all
I posted last week about guitar advice and this culminated in me buying a Yamaha Pacifica 112J.
I have used an iRig mix / iPad / PC combination for my amplification needs until last night when a Zoom G1Xon dropped onto my doorstep.
Now I'm a little naive when it comes to guitar matters but this bit of kit has blown me away.
For the grand total of £65 I get the option of chaining 5 effects together, 22 amplifier simulations, 68 Percussion tracks, a looper and an expression pedal.
There are 100 premade effects all of which can be edited (not found the need yet!)
There's an aux in so I can play along to my ipod / ipad / PC.
All in all a great bit of kit for a beginner like me and will be a few years before I outgrow it

In my experience, it has always been better to have stand alone FX than a multi-effects pedal, although the technology is getting much better than it used to be.
Zoom is something I tend to steer clear of personally, but another man's trash is a another man's treasure.

I appreciate I'm at the top of a very slippery slope but the ride down looks excellent!
I'm under no illusion that the Zoom pedal thingy is a stop gap until I know what the sounds are that I really like. So far it's the chorus sounds and the 12 string emulator. Still haven't got my head around the compressor stuff. The distortion effects seem a little OTT but I need to play more

What sort of stuff do you like to play?
Compressors are very handy, but it is a rather subjective effect. It can level out your loud/soft playing, or give you a thicker quack (and some compressor pedals allow you to add/remove certain frequencies).
I used to gig with a 17 pedal board (everything got used), but I sold a load of gear to come to Oz. Now I think I'd probably have a much smaller board, albeit with more unusual effects.
I think effects can be very handy tools, and as much as it is really important to work on playing/ getting better, it is also a good idea to experiment and explore with sound. Look forward to hearing your effects quest.

On one hand single FX pedals look awesome on a mammoth pedal board and you can mix and match depending on what you're playing.
On the other you end up with a large level of complexity and difficulty in re-routing/ordering the FX chain on the fly.
I've a modest pedal board - compressor, tuner and SansAmp DI (6 programmable settings).
I've a Zoom B2.1 multiFX pedal - amp models, FX, tuner.
I've an Avid Eleven Rack.
The board is simple and easy to get doing what I want but limited by lack of delays, etc.
The Zoom is portable, acts as a useful USB interfacce (and came with Cubase) but it's a bit fiddly to play around with FX. The sounds aren't top notch and it's a bit noisy.
The Eleven rack sounds incredible and the sounds I can get out of it are quality. It's taught me to rely more on the Amp models than FX for drive and tone. It's heavy and doesn't take midi/foot control well. Came with a full copy of ProTools.
Quality modelled amps and FX are the way to go for me - I'm considering PXing the Avid rack for the Line 6 Helix when it's released - ease of programming, quality sound and foot controllable.
