For years I've had a set of Mordaunt Short 5.1 speakers hooked up to my receiver.
Today I replaced the fronts with some bookshelf speakers in an effort to improve 2 channel audio quality.

The small satellite speakers are all four ohm impedance. The new ones are 8 ohm. The receiver a Sony strda1200es has a global setting of either 4 or 8 ohms but not per channel. Not sure what it actually changes as my other amp (2 channel) is is apparently ok with either with no switch or setting.

Four ohm is harder to drive than 8, am I best off setting the amp to this?

The amp is still going to drive the 4 ohm Mordaunt Short load on the other channels so leave it on the current setting. Your new 8 ohm bookshelf speakers will just be drawing a little less current from the two front channels.

More relevant is to make sure that the 5.1 levels are set up correctly; relatively the new 8 ohm bookshelves might not play a loud as the previous 4 ohm MS units.
