Looking to get my step father a hi-fi for his birthday to replace his 90s grey plastic monstrosity!

Would be grateful for recommendations around the £150 mark.

Only essential feature is for it to still have a CD drive and ideally be reasonably large to sit nicely in his cabinet where the old one is. Don't want some fancy, small Bluetooth only thing. Some kind of iPod connectivity would be great though.

I'm a complete luddite with this stuff so any suggestions welcome/pointers that I'm way off the mark!

Cheers.

Could do worse than this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-CMT-SBT-100B-System-B...

I don't think I'd buy anything like that without DAB these days.

This looks decent too: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-MM-E460D-Bluetooth...

Are the speakers from the old grey unit any good ? If they are good then you can use them with one of these http://www.richersounds.com/product/mini-hi-fi/den...

DM39 is an established product that has a great reputation for sound quality and reliability. It has a CD player and the USB input on the front is I-pod/phone/pad compatible.

Check out the specification section to see if the size fits what you're wanting; DM39s aren't very big.

Thank you both.

Speakers are equally hideous so would have to be a package.

Notice that all three systems linked to are that smaller size. Was wanting something a bit on the larger size but guessing that's what they're all like nowadays. The larger ones I've seen in the likes of Argos are a bit on the "garish" side.

This one isn't big either but it does come with speakers.

What is the "grey Monstrosity"? Matsui I would bin. NAD I wouldn't and they are both Grey. Be wary of buying something that is not as good as that you are throwing out.

For £150 I would go second hand components on Ebay. Particularly “collection only” as some real bargains can be had.
