Was out in my monaro and the temp gauge was starting to move as it got warm then check engine light came on and the gauge went back to zero and stayed there. Checked for fault codes but didn't find any.
Any idea what could be causing this?

It sounds more like a faulty sensor or broken wiring.

It will be a reader problem. If the light is on, 100% there will be codes that caused it...I have never been too sure about the reader i have as i have had the check engine light on before but never picked up a code.
Unless of course the CEL light itself is faulty and lighting up on it's own.
