Temperature gauge not working

Was out in my monaro and the temp gauge was starting to move as it got warm then check engine light came on and the gauge went back to zero and stayed there. Checked for fault codes but didn't find any.

Any idea what could be causing this?

Low water level?

A leak in the radiator would give these symptoms. Fine until the 'stat opens, but then water going into the radiator leaves the temp sender high and dry, and not registering a temperature.

I checked the water level and it was full. Had a new radiator fitted last year.

Did you check the level in the radiator, or just the header tank?

If the check engine light is on, there will be codes.

It sounds more like a faulty sensor or broken wiring.

I checked in the tank as my dip stick for my tank is broken so cant use that.

I hope it is a sensor like the oil pressure one I had the other week.

I have never been too sure about the reader i have as i have had the check engine light on before but never picked up a code.

It will be a reader problem. If the light is on, 100% there will be codes that caused it...

Unless of course the CEL light itself is faulty and lighting up on it's own.

always thought the reader was a bit crap as I thought there should have been codes to read.

Ment to update this earlier and bring a bit closure to this thread but forgot. Replaced the coolant temp sensor as it was quick and easy to do and it turned out to be what was wrong. Spot of luck there.
