I went on Saturday too, really enjoyed it; the best Flying Legends display for quite a few years, and a huge crowd - I've not seen it as packed in a long time. Here are a few pics - I particularly liked the Bf109 and Sea Fury, and of course the fourteen(?) Spitfires:

I've been both days. Yesterday was glorious. Today was a little showery at times but I agree with the above. This has been the best in a while.

Fred Akary again put on one of the best aerobatic displays you'll see with a warbird.

Been having massive Legends withdraw symptoms this weekend, as after 20 years, it's the first one I've not been able to attend

There's another airshow in September I think, and IIRC it's pre-booked ticket only. In some ways the earlier/later airshows are nicer in terms of being less crowded, plus you get some older/more modern stuff too.

I caught a glimpse of the P38 overhead in deepest Essex yesterday, no more than five seconds. Surprised is an inadequate description.

A gleaming silver P38 is as awesome today (for me at least) as anything I've seen. I can only imagine what it must have seemed like in 1936.

I was driving past Sawston when the whole shooting match flew over, into a threatening sky, most impressive, was impressed by the Bf109 too, didn't realise one was still flying and its DB sounds gruntier than the smooth Merlin engines

It would have been an absolutely amazing sight - especially since the prototype didn't make its first flight until 1939

Technically, it's a re-engined Buchon rather than a 'real' 109.......although, hopefully before too long we'll get to see a pucka 109 in UK skies again, once the Biggin Hill based 109E is put back together and gets a permit.

As for the DB sounding gruntier than a Merlin, it's probably down to capacity, as the saying goes, there's no replacemen for displacement
The Merlin was only 27 litres whereas the DB605 was 35.7 litres so almost the same capacity as the later RR Griffon which was 37 litres.

On balance, ambush by P38, Lanc, Spitfire, Catalina et al is far better than yet another air show with restricted display lines.

Overhead ambush by Lanc exceeds all.
