Golf plus 1.4 (122) TSi 2008 Rattle on start up
Discussion
Hi,
I've just bought a 2008 Volkswagen Golf plus 1.4 TSi (122) with 51,000 miles on the clock, from a main dealer.
My question is, when I start the car from cold, there is a rattle for about 2-5 seconds?
(I run it on esso supreme only, it has a full Volkswagen service history
The car is going in on Wednesday to see if the main dealer can sort it out.)
Has anyone on here had the same problem & if so what is it? Thanks.

I expect cam chain tensioner - chain rattling until the oil reaches normal operating pressure to tension it correctly.
The 1.8 and 2.0 TSIs have a recognised fault with the first few tensioner revisions that can lead to catastrophe when the ratchet system fails and chain jumps on starting the engine. Anticipate it may be a similar story for smaller chain driven TSI engines too, so suggest you do some research and then push the dealer to replace once you know enough to fight your corner. If it is a known issue it will be far less expensive for them to replace the tensioner now rather than fork out for a new head/new engine when the tensioner fails, but given the age I wouldn't bet on them volunteering to do a preemptive repair without some prompting.
To get you started, it looks like this is a similar engine/age to yours, just with supercharger bolted on too;

Agree with Simion - chain TENSIONER is most likely given what you said. It's a known issue with the tsi engines.
Wife had the same issue with her 4 y/o Ibiza (1.2 tsi). Dealer eventually fixed for free outside of warranty - but not without a lot of convincing and to/fro (85% Seat, 15% "dealer contribution") although the reality is they're only losing out on labour as the parts cost them (afaik) not a lot. In our case car was owned from new (and dealer serviced), and had rattled on occasions for a while, which we'd raised with the garage previously and they said it was just a brake cable / similar.

Hi, thanks for all the replies.
I took it back (it rattles even after 2 hours standing) the service dept. says they want it overnight to hear the rattle (I even showed the a video of me starting the car to be brought down the same day) both the sales & service said "they cannot hear a thing!"
The salesmen also said "it didn't rattle when he sold it to me" he got a point, but forgot to add
1) it was already running
2) it was warm
I had the car on Saturday 4th July 2015 with 51,666 miles on the clock @ I have dropped it off today with 51,761 miles on it!
So how can Sinclairs or VW deny knowledge ??

I had quite an unpleasant experience with a recent purchase of a new car from Sinclair so not really a fan of that dealership myself!
Anyway from having the same timing chain problem a couple of years ago with another car, you do need to leave it with them for a night or two so they can hear the noise themselves. It's a very irritating and intermittent problem but will require attention sooner or later.
If the car has a warranty (assuming it does) push for replacement of the the camshaft adjuster, timing chain and tensioner. It's a very labour intensive job so makes sense to replace all the bits whilst the engine is open.

I will, I've only had the car ten days!! So fingers crossed they will do the repairs like you have said above, thanks once again.
Mind me asking but what trouble did you have with Sinclairs?
Thanks
