Had a intriguing encounter late last night, heading back home.

Exited A12 at Witham, and was a tad tardy slowing to 60 for NSL on single carriage way. Then again a bit tardy slowing completely to 30 at the posted sign before the round about (for those who know the road) (was doing around 35-38 at the sign.

Over roundabout and cruised at about 32-35, till I clocked car behind was a police car... then slowly let my speed drop. Car ahead went off into distance.

Police followed me through Witham for a bit, but either stopped or turned off.

I carry on, going up the Braintree road... ensuring I kept strictly to the speed limits, when a car comes charging up behind me, then settling down. Clock its the police car (or another) when some lights reflect off it.

Do police ever send a NIP for speeding without pulling you? or did I just get shown some discretion and they were checking the appropriate lesson was learned later?

Or did they just not care? The way they come charging up behind me suggests they were exercising their exemption to break speed limits.

I drive a bit of a boy racer car, if that adds anything to the context.

Yes they can send you the NIP without pulling you over. It's unlikely but possible.

Police cars 'race up behind you' in the hope you will react by accelerating away. It is how they get their kicks.

I posted a still from the video of one that had done this to me a year or two ago.

To add some balance - the likelihood is that they were seeing how observant you were, and whether you would moderate your speed after having seen them. "Racing up behind you" was probably intended to make you notice their presence. You did, and they were satisfied to leave it at that. The fact you're posting this thread suggests it left an impression, which was the intention.

It is possible you could get a NIP in the post, but vanishingly unlikely given the context and their ability to pull you over there and then if they had chosen imo.

Yer - they do it all the time.
I mean, catching speeding drivers without the need of using such tactics is like shooting fish in a barrel, but I'm sure they all quite regularly speed up behind people and goad them into speeding.

And if a speeding car comes up behind you, I mean, the first instinct is to accelerate away isn't it?
