Setting up a website for a hobby and probably ought to put a phone number, ideally not my own mobile number. Thought about maybe getting a cheap pay-as-you-go number and possibly redirecting, then saw those sites that sell a local looking landline number which rings through to your mobile.

Any recommendations for such a service provider? Are them some with inclusive minutes etc for redirected calls? We're talking very low call volumes (if any at all), but would be good to have a standalone number. If it ever grew to the stage where we needed a proper landline, can you keep the allocated number?

I use vonage.co.uk

I have a local landline number with them, but I've set it to auto forward to my mobile.

I also use switchboardfree.co.uk with a couple of 084 numbers which forward to mobiles (£9.99 a month unlimited redirects) it first rings my sales agent, if he doesn't answer then it rings my mobile.

Can recommend both products, never really had any problems, does what it says on the tin and doesn't cost a fortune.

Used them for around 6 years, never let me down, as far as I know every call has come through.

I got mine through Vodafone. Calls come through to my mobile on a local landline number but with a different ringtone so I know what numbers being called. Plus unlimited calls and 4gb for £35 per month.

I use Twilio. Choose the number you want, then I have a Twimlet that redirects the number to my mobile. If I don't answer then it has its own voicemail which I can pick up via any web browser. You buy credit and the redirection per minute is cheap as chips. I don't get that many calls and I've spent about £20 in 18 months.

Thanks all for the suggestions. Twilio looks great and a slight problem tinkering with settings on my trial account was solved almost immediately by their tech help - they get my vote. Got a local-looking number for $1 a month and call forwarding is fractions of pennies (can ring multiple phones at the same time, voicemails and loads of other stuff).
