DIY RSR style silencers

Evening all,

Since Gert seems to be out of stock for now my attention turned to the possibility of home made mufflers for my 993.
A quick search pings up people's experiences which seem to be positive with no down sides at all.
Basically the boxes are removed, completely gutted apart from 100mm inlet and out pipes then tig welded back up.
Has anyone done this recently or more importantly has anyone experienced any down sides at all ie anything melting?

As an aside I'm just back from a glorious hoon and the 993 continuous to impress and the love affair deepens.

Personally I wouldn't bother with all this cuttining open and removing stuff from the silencer boxes, just get a 1" bypass pipe welded in between the inlet and outlet.

I got mine done for £50 at a local welding place and they sound absolutely fantastic, whilst barely making any more noise inside the car.

Outside it has a real open pipe sound compete with minor pops and bangs

Mine is just done diy and so far no downside whatsoever. Nothing melted and sounds superb. Half hr job taking off and same going back.
Posted some db figures on 911uk last night its quite civilised at idle and 102db at 3/4 throttle
No downside and you also get a decent weight loss.

Our RSRs do not have silencers ....... just straight through pipes ....only way

I had a set of Fabspeed Supercup exhausts for my 993, which are basically straight through pipes right off the Cat, and you simply couldn't use them on a regular basis, especially if you live in an urban area.

They were horrendously loud.

Don't get me wrong, the sound of a 3.6 Flat 6 with open pipes is absolutely incredible, but just far too loud for any kind of normal use.

I'm very pleased with mine as basically empty boxes, its very civilised at idle (84db ish) and a steady 102db at 4000rpm. i saw a peak at 107db with a lift off pop, but generally 102db max is perfectly nice for a sporty car.
