Mk5 GTI is a superior drive to a mk1 TT, which is essentially a mk4 Golf

I drove a Stage 1 Bluefin'd MK1 TT 225 whilst I owned a KO3 MK5 GTI. The characteristics, both in handling terms and performance terms is very different. The TT felt quite laggy and unresponsive low down in the rev range, whereas the smaller turbo'd GTI picks up quite quickly, but runs out of breath sooner. The Golf is also far more fun, though a standard one will understeer quite a bit compared to the current crop of hot hatches (although nowhere near as badly as the TT).

Agree with the above, the Mk5 is the better drive. The 20VT feels decidedly old-school in its power delivery compared to the later TFS, which is fun if you like that kind of thing, but the Golf is a much better steer and feels punchier in the mid-range.

IMO despite the TT being Haldex, marginally more powerful in standard form and apparently half a second faster to 60, the Golf feels faster too.

I currently have a Mk5 Gti and i'm looking to change because of all the rust issues i'm having.

Does anybody know what the v6 TT is like compared to the Mk5?

If it wasn't for the rust I would be keeping the Golf for a long time but its time to get out now. I'm struggling to think of anything that could match the golf in terms of handling and all round performance.

Thanks

V6 TT is heavy nosed. Doesn't handle nearly as well as a GTI.

What rust issues are you having?

Rusty wings are still being replaced by VW FOC if the car still has the original paint. If the sills are rusting (where they meet the wings), that's 50/50 due to a technicality VW call 'edge and fold', which isn't covered by the 12 year rust warranty. Other than that, MK5s are far from rust buckets.

I test drove an 07 Edition 30 and a TT V6 DSG back to back last year and I bought the ED30. There's no comparison!

The TT with it's first generation DSG felt laggy on the gearshifts and just felt heavy, slow witted and cumbersome in general, plus of course the famous numb helm. The Edition by comparison is much more responsive and handles so much better.

As has been mentioned, both wings are rusting, both sills where the wings meet are starting to blister, where the rear 1/4 meets the bumper is showing signs of blistering, there are spots in the middle of the panel on the lower of the drivers door and there was a chunk of paint came off under the handle on the boot lid.

I have spoke to VW who said the wings should be ok to get done but there is little chance of the rest. I also have to wait until November for them to look at it as they are that busy with complaints of the wings on other VW's too. The guy said he has done most of the Mk5's in Teesside.

Last week the rear wiper packed up.

I just want out now.

By comparison, my 07 Ed30 has had just one wing done. No rust anywhere else. I think you got a lemon, so I can understand your desire to get shot of it, but I would not go from a MK5 to a MK1 TT. Definitely a backward step in terms of driver enjoyment.

Must have been lucky, the 2006 GTI I owned for 6 years showed no signs of rust.

it seems every car I get interested in has unexpected issues...

So a MK1 TT 225 remapped would be dull? - Looking for an interim car whilst saving for an HR 350z or perhaps TT Mk2 S mapped to 300hp ..is that one dull too?

Depends what your budget is - if you're only after an interim car, a mk1 TT will be a lot cheaper than a golf. And if you can buy right you won't loose too much cash when you get your new one.

I have a 225 mk1 TT and find it perfectly fine, but then I only do 4-5 miles to the station and back each day. It's fine for drivers, but pretty useless if you ever need to take more than 1 passenger

The only person who can tell you if a TT is dull is you. Drive one, see what you think. It having 300bhp will make it (reasonably) fast, but that doesn't always equal exciting.

Depends. TTs are still depreciating as far as I can tell, whereas prices on Mk5 Golfs have been static for ages. If you're a cash buyer and looking to get rid in 12 months you'd probably lose less on the Golf.

In the last 7 years I've had two Mk5 GTis and two 225 TT - along with several other cars - all were pretty much standard though, not modded.

They are completely different cars, both with their appeal. Finding a good one of either is the challenge though - you will have to sift through some crap.

The Golf is a great all rounder - everyone loved it - no one ever has a bad work to say about is - day to day it feels just like a Golf though, it lacks something special.

The TT feels a special quality place to spend time - its a great GT car - I love the looks and quality feel - nothing has matched its concept car looks since IMO.

Why not be daft like me and buy a mk5 golf gti then a TT then a 5dr mark 5 the er, another TT. smile If I didn't need more space I'd still have the last TT - I replaced it with a 325i E92 coupe.

Seems a shame. Wife has a MK5, nearly ten years old and its bloody immaculate. Would suspect you've been unlucky and bought a pup.

I had a few words to say about it as fo most people I know that have driven them.

Boring dashboard, horrid tartan seats if no leather specced, boring engine with no character, rust like an Austin.

Capable but zzzzzz

To be fair, and you must realise this, you're in a pretty small minority who feel the same. Look at all the magazine reviews, the amount of people on this very site who love them...
