Tried to put an update onto sleepy-fish last night, and got the message:

cannot find ftp server sleepy-fish.com on port 21.

This was through Frontpage.

Went into Network places in Explorer, and tried to drag and drop (normally works fine), and the server cannot be located.

Did a quick look on Google and it suggested something along the lines of Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings > Proxy server and adding an ip address and port. Meant bu99er all to me (as usual )

Its not the firewall, as I've permitted Frontpage through that.

Any other suggestions / thoughts?

Won't be able to test until tomorrow evening, all suggestions very welcome.

I'm guessing its some kind of config setting, rather than Frontpage, as I can't go through Explorer either to FTP stuff up to the web.

I've just tried pinging www.sleepy-fish.com and its fine.

Could be that the FTP server at the host end is down?

Hi Matt....thanks.

Couldn't be sure if the ftp upload thingie was working properly or if it was an issue at easynet...

Found this article on the MS knowledge base, and will try tomorrow night:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=842242 ...about manually opening ports that have been shut on XP SP2....although I do remember uploading stuff since putting SP2 on.

I was under the impression, which could admittedly be wrong, that the XP firewall was only protecting incoming traffic.

You are experiencing issues on outbound traffic which should be default be unrestricted.

Are you using FrontPage's internal FTP?

I would definitely try using a separate FTP.

Any of THESE will do the job nicely

I'm sure you're right.

Clutching at straws at the moment....will look at / investigate anything suggested.

Perhaps not

Using Frontpage to publish has always worked fine. I'm sure this is a config issue. Its possible that there was a problem at the server end for the hour I was attempting to upload, but as I say, I can't check this until tomorrow night

What are the benefits of using a different ftp program then? Always up for trying something new if its better.

I've never used embedded FTPs to be honest. Use Dreamweaver then upload using FETCH (mac programs).

I just feel the external FTPs are a better bet as they're designed to do one job and do it well. You never really know with embedded programs how good they are.

Also WS_FTP Pro is a genius program as it brings up your computer's folders next to the servers folders. Drag and drop at its best

Have a play... if you don't like it you've always got the FrontPage jobbie... if you like it then

Update:

Due to a server migration of my site (and others), ftp upload had (has) been temporarily disabled.

Thanks for the tips peeps

You do miss out on Dreamweaver's code management (check-in / check-out) then though, which is a god-send working with multiple web designer/developers when they won't or can't use proper source control.

The amount of time that feature has saved me is amazing

But, as you say the FTPing is a little crap, I use CuteFTP myself normally...

Yep - as promised sleepyfish, pistonheads.tv and a few others are moving onto an upgraded server system "due to popular demand".

To ensure we didn't break any websites we disabled FTP for the time it took to move the files from one server to another. A quick call to our support department would have confirmed this

Yup, which is where I got the answer

I only asked on here first, as I figured it was a problem with my config, due to the number of changes its undergone recently

As for Easynet.....
