DON'T call me Sebastian - or I'll sue!
Discussion
What, precisely, is happening here?
Why are people so abysmally, pitifully wet these days?
Apparently, a hommosexual chap, manager of some waste disposal company has just been awarded approximately £35k by an industrial tribunal following allegations which seemed to centre on work colleagues calling him 'Sebastian' (after the Little Britain campanologist) and 'dear.'
The only gay in the office recived £10k for 'injury to his feelings' and the balance in damages as effective constructive dismissal, following his claim of forced resignation.
The tribunal chairperson (careful!) reckoned the persistence of the 'abuse' amounted to a 'substantial haemorrhage.'
The chap involved, presumably with some Aretha Franklin warbling in the background, hoped the ruling would help him restore some dignity back into his life.
Pictures of a smart looking tribunal victor accompanied this story, perhaps not entirely helping his new search for employment going forward.
It seems to me that the only thing haemorrhaging here is the last droplet of common sense from amidst the feeble minded, liberal intelligentsia who are shafting the nation.
Absolutely ludicrous.

I think there's a line to be drawn, but I get the idea that we're in the habit of redrawing it again and again to the detriment of everyone's sense of humour.
I mean, if they'd called him Daffyd, would that pose the same problem - a character devised and played by a gay man that I can only assume gay people find funny? So why all the fuss?
If it amounted to personal abuse, fair enough but it's never worth £35k. If it was just a friendly nickname (possibly even brought on by something this guy did), then it just goes to show how pathetic the whole situation's become.

Ok, everyone should feel safe at work (given that you arent some sort of bomb disposal expert or something) and free from abuse and intimidation.... but there would be NO reason for this type of thing to get to an industrial tribunal....
It could, and should, have been dealt with fairly by the employers. A little dicipline and maybe a written warning would have probably sufficed. They didnt and now they are paying the price - maybe next time they wont take such things to lightly....
But agree, its mad to have got that far. Neednt have done and could have been dealt with without resorting to courts, tribunals and fines...... bizzare.

I suppose hes never had a lighthearted mocking session with his mates then.
Jesus If only I was part of a minority I would be worth millions by now.
12 hours worth of piss taking is what i get whne I go to work.
I suppose he would sue if all the others took the piss out of each other and left him out.
Id lay money on that already happened in this messed up country

Also, the country is run by people who were bullied at school. If you go crying to teacher and throw some backstabbing in while you're at it, you prop a ladder against the greasy pole.
I blame the parents.
When I was a sprog, one of my first presents was a gun; it was bloody ace.
Nowadays, emasculation is the goal, particularly amongst the bourgoise, from whose ranks the foul legislators arise.
As for bullying, I think it's an essential ingedient in character building: not too much (and there's the catch) but liberally sprinkled with a smile and a black eye ~ marvellous.

FFS piss-taking is a part of life. Take it on the chin and move on... or thump the twat with no imagination.
I've got to disagree there. Pisstaking is a part of life WITH FRIENDS. If it's people you trust and respect doing it, you take it in the spirit intended.
If it's people you just work with, but have little personal relationship with (for whatever reason), then it is reasonable to get offended - and if the management failed to deal with it, then the company has rightly got shafted. If you're happy to work in an environment where people have no respect for you and abuse you daily, then that is your personal failing.
While I find the whole PC thing goes too far sometimes, I agree with the concept that dignity is a right of everyone at work...and continually comparing someone to a character of ridicule on a comedy show is denying them dignity.
As for hitting people - yeah, GREAT idea
- get yourself fired AND a criminal record!£35K is hardly a massive amount though is it?? From the article he is supposed to be in a high up management role of one the countries biggest companies?? Earning perhaps >£35k?? £35k for the company isn't a massive amount of money for them to pay out.
I have a feeling the award was made as it was PC yet the judge had the same feeling as the majoritory of us on here.
