Runs better without vacuum advance pipe

Why would this be?

I noticed my car doesn't have a vacuum advance pipe - although it was running fantastically I bought a proper one from TMS (to avoid the pipe collapsing under pressure).

When put on the car was a dog. Popping and banging, mis-firing not able to rev above 5k. Take the pipe off and all is well!

I've just had some stage 3 heads put on - is it something to do with that?

Are you sure you're putting the pipe on the right way round? They are directional.

Failing that, maybe the vac advance unit on your dizzy is knackered.

Sounds like it to me. Maybe that is why it had been disconnected?

Was there anything covering the hole in the inlet manifold then, when the pipe wasn't there?

Nope, the holes weren't covered.

You say the pipe is directional? I can't tell from looking which way it goes!

The pipe was there before I had the stage 3 heads put on...

Have you tried blowing through it? (the pipe that is!)

Originally this pipe would have had a valve in the middle. If yours doesn't, don't worry about it. They can cause problems if they block up, and are often removed. If you take the pipe off completely you should block the port into the throttle body otherwise it will let unmetered air in off load.
