Nick Heidfeld has won his nail-biting contest with Antonio Pizzonia for the second Williams drive.

The German was confirmed as Mark Webber’s team-mate at the launch of the team’s 2005 car at Valencia this morning.

Heidfeld and Pizzonia have been engaged in a protracted evaluation process since before Christmas. The decision was delayed until the eve of the launch because the two drivers were so evenly matched.

Heidfeld initially made a stronger impression but Pizzonia was stymied by a series of niggling technical problems that restricted his track time. It is believed the decisive factor was Heidfeld’s superior pace in a direct head-to-head contest on equal fuel loads at Valencia last Wednesday.

Yes great news that he has beaten jungle boy Pizzonia

Not sure about the choice here!

Never really impressed with NH and I suspect he could go the same way as Frentzen.

You never know though!

I think Williams have made the right choice. I hope he does well but I don't know whether he'll be able to give Mark Webber a run for his money though.

Yep right choice - gave Kimi a good run in t Saubers -pretty level then dumped on by Ron - so goo result - Pizzonia - just not fast or consistent. Should be at least as good as the out going pair over all.

in my opinion, schumacher has made them all look average. whether this is the car, him, a combination of the two or what i dont know but i do not honestly think there as many mid-table drivers in F1 at the moment whom are worth all this fuss come the winter....

Heidfeld will drive as average as a season as he has done previously. By that I mean he will get the Williams where the Williams should be in terms of position both on the grid and in the race. However, we will not see the drives like Senna in the Toleman at Monaco or Alesi in the Tyrell at Phoenix again.

Webber has done nothing to prove to me he is going to set the world on fire, he is fast but seems to lack a final edge. Frentzen, Pizzonia, Heidfeld, Trulli and the rest of the mid table F1 platoon, they have all blurred into the same as far as I can tell, none of them are any different to each other. Put that Hungarian Baumgartner chap in a Williams and I bet he would be on the same pace as any one of those listed above.

I look forward to 2008 when we should have Rosberg Jr, Piquet Jr, and the rest of the young talent in F1 (whatever F1 may be by then) Let us hope by then they have their fathers racing edge and the cars to do their talents justice.

I think pizzonia is a very fast driver - it seemed as if he had a bit of a problem with pressure but his drives for williams last year dispelled that a bit.

I remember watching him in Formula Renault and he just blew everybody away every race I saw him - led by miles and was miles quicker each lap than anybody else.
