The bike insurance renewed today but showing red on AskMID. Only realised this when I got to work, so have printed out docs for trip home, but I've heard all sorts of horror stories about police failing to accept documents.

What's the recommended approach? I know I'm insured and have printed evidence, but if an "I am the law" type decides to inconvenience me despite me holding valid insurance, what do I need to do to maximise the claim for inconvenience?

If you are stopped, the police can check directly with the insurer. The inconvenience will be a few minutes, at worst.

AskMID is not the same system that the police have access to either.

You've done all you can, if you were stopped on your way home it would result in a brief call to check the cover.

You won't need to claim. The police would not seize your bike if you explain you have just taken the policy out. It can take about 5 days for the insurance database to update. The police can check dates on PNC and it would show that the policy finished the day before to back up your story.

The will either call MIB and speak to your insurer and let you on your way or give you a producers to produce documents within 7 days.

Quite happy that they'll need to stop me if "computer says no", but I'm talking about any continued inconvenience even when I've shown them my papers. Call to insurers sounds promising but sometimes they have trouble getting through?

Cool and very fair, thanks very much.

Are you as nervous about exceeding the speed limit on every journey? Do you give your bike a full 100 point service check before riding just to ensure it is fully roadworthy? Is your visor tinted? Have you checked that it complies with the legal requirements for light transmission?

All of the above are just as likely to land you in hot water as your scenario.

...and just as off topic. But thanks anyway.

I wouldn't worry - my wife was stopped in our car for pinging as non-insured after midnight. Insurers were obviously closed and she didn't have insurance documents on her. They asked a few questions and eventually let her on her way.

Turns out it was an issue over recognising the number 0 instead of Os.

As long as you're reasonable with them, the vast majority of police will be more than reasonable with you.

It seems a lot of people start paying their insurance premium monthly and then stop paying after a couple of months. they still have the same paperwork as someone who continues to pay. Other than evidence to another driver that a policy has been in place I wouldn't worry too much about insurance paperwork these days.

Well quite, this is what bothered me. Although my docs seem to state single payment suggesting that particular scam wouldn't apply in my case.

Not really. Is there a chance that you might exceed the speed limit on way home this evening?

Is there a chance that your bike may have a slight defect rendering it potentially unroadworthy?

Both as likely as the chances of you potentially being pulled for no insurance

Tell you what as you're so scared. If you get pulled and the bike confiscated, I'll donate £1000 to a charity if your choice. I'll need some simple proof though, such as the PC's badge number and a copy of the paperwork they give you when they confiscate it.

If you don't then you give £50 to a charity of my choice.

Your call.

Odd. I'd have thought you wanted to minimise the inconvenience.

If you want to maximise it, then kick the policeman in the bks, st in his hat, then nick his car and screaming off into the distance yelling "You'll never take me alive, pig!". Oh, and make sure you leave him in possession of your driving licence.

That should get you more than enough inconvenience.

I thought you were trolling but turns out you genuinely don't understand the question I posed. I know you're already very well represented in the list of the most useless posts on PH ever, but here I believe you've excelled even yourself.

So run along now, there's a good girl.

You may think that's a good put down, but it's actually pretty weak. Let's go back to your question "How do I maximise the claim for inconvenience?"

That says everything we need to know about you and your outlook. Not asking "Am I likely to be pulled?" Not asking"What happens if if I am pulled?" Not asking "Will a copy of the new insuramce documents suffice as proof that I'm insured?" Not asking "What should I do if they try to seize my bike?"

Nope your question was all about the worst case scenario happening and then how to monetise that in your favour. That should explain why I asked my initial questions and why your out downs are water off a duck's back.

Ah, but since any compensation he may or may not get would be directly proportional to the inconvenience experienced, to maximise the claim, he needs to maximise the inconvenience.

Oh - and OP... I forgot. You need to make sure it's all on dashcam, and linked from here. Thanks.

Genuine question. Let's suppose the affected party works a late shift in their job and the tug was at 2am: is this service available 24/7?
