Performante to Mclaren
Discussion
I'm thinking of selling my Performante and replacing it with a Mclaren, probably and MP12 or a 650.
Has anyone else made this move? I've never driven a Mac and my main concerns would be the reputed aloofness and lack of aural drama.
Would welcome thoughts from anyone that has experience of both/all three.
Thanks

Having driven all three, I feel you will miss the Lambo.
Couple of considerations. The performante will appreciate in value. I'd struggle to let one go.
The 12C is depreciating and will continue to do so for a while.
I would highly recommend a good drive in the 650. Assuming you are taking about the S?
The 650 is the car the 12C should have been. Don't get me wrong the 12C is still a great supercar, but the 650 is a cut above in my opinion, having driven them back to back.
Therefore I personally would only consider the 650 and even then, do you really want to let go of the Lamborghini?

My LP currently in the classifieds below if anyone interested

I have switched into a 12c 2 weeks ago so early days yet but it is not the slap in the face that the Lambo is, my 12c has the sports exhaust and is a fantastic car but as you were talking sound then the Lambo is a better sounding car.
12c a lot easier to drive and very comfortable in normal mode as I am sure you have read, very adaptable suspension.

Ok just to put things into perspective a bit, and talking my own book slightly.Couple of considerations. The performante will appreciate in value. I'd struggle to let one go.

12c has been at these levels for about a year now, few dipped and sold very quickly to 115 over xmas.
How can anyone pay the asking price currently for a performante when they are very close to Hurracan money, I hope they hold money and no reason to think otherwise with the support below of the LP and std early cars, but dont see why they would go up ?
I drove the 12C and Lambo when looking to get to replace my California a few months ago. I went for a Speciale in the end which I'm really pleased with.
Of the 12C and Lambo, I'd stick with the latter. For EXACTLY the reasons you mention (aloofness and exhaust). I would add one further point though: the amount of spiel on IRIS from the dealer and online almost put me to sleep. Version 1, Update 2, software this and that. It all got a little tedious and I actually put me off a little. I am sure some people will disagree with me on this. Saying that, I've not been in or driven any of the new McLaren variants. Aesthetically they do look better than their predecessor I find.
As you may know already, there is a rather active member of this forum who will be along shortly to outline the pro's and cons of both cars more accurately. He is also fairly vocal on values of both vehicles so perhaps he could give you a more up to date steer with regard to that.
Good luck with your choice. It's a fun position to be in!

Thanks for the replies, which confirm my thoughts really. I'd probably like to try something different because I rarely drive the Performate as it is v low miles and absolutely mint. I know that shouldn't stop me, but it does, and is the paradox of owning an immaculate car. I should have bought something with more miles on it!
Not sure I have the patience to sit on it as a collectors' car.

Neither Mclaren is going to sound as good as the V10 in the lambo for sure. They do however make plenty of noise, perhaps not particularly nice sounding but lots of it nevertheless and in it's own way not any worse than the 458, plus it comes without the idiotic exhaust valve opening at 3k rpm...Plenty of wastegate noise in the 650 as well that the 12c lacks if you like that kind of thing.
Personally I don't think the Mclaren is anything like aloof as claimed by some but it's certainly not as hyperactive as a 458 and one can find it awfully easy to be doing absolutely mental speeds. Plus the temptation when mooching along from point a to b is to drive the car in it's normal comfort modes and that really can make the car feel very 'normal'. Think you mentioned you had a R8 - the 12c is a bit like that but just much lighter and with far better steering/brake feel. As a special occasions car though the gallardo probably is the better car I suspect (never driven one but know some people with them) but if you're using it a lot the Mclaren is very hard to beat IMO.
650 - 12c, well.. differences to me are not worth the premium to change (and some of the changes are worse for me personally) plus I like the 12c's look as it's much more cohesive compared to plastering the P1 face over the 12c in the 650. Build quality on the 650s is definitely better though....

650S spider is the way to go IMHO. Not as loud or shouty as the Lambo but massively superior driving dynamics and performance.
They are like chalk and cheese with the McLaren being such an accomplished all round car whilst the Performante feels agricultural and slow in comparison. Don't get me wrong I love the whole theatre and drama of driving the Performante but it does feel very old in comparison and will only date further IMHO. Happy with current residuals though
12C prices have stabilised and will now prop up the 650S which is only being produced for sold orders so will be in very short supply and circa 200 cars in the UK and < 2500 worldwide.
Having drove 12c and 650S back to back when I was looking at purchasing a 12 mth old 12c Spider it was immediately apparent to me how much better the 650S was up and above the already brilliant 12C. So much so I upped the budget by 50% and £80k.
For me the 12C didn't hit the spot subjectively with the sound and feel.
In comparison to the Performante I would say you would be disappointed with a 12C if the subjective stuff floats your boat, but with the 650S there was a massive improvement in this area so the gap to Performante is no where near as big and the performance and dynamic gains outweigh the slight sound experience difference versus the V10 Lambo.
Have to say £205k used 650S spiders seem a bargain to me compared with Ferrari 458 prices and personally I thinks its a far superior car to boot
