Teacher Question...leave during term
Discussion
I'll be brief
Every year myself and my partner go for a few days away between October and the new year, this is always at half term or at the Christmas. Due to reduced leave availability at my workplace, and joint commitments at awkward times its looking like an impossibility to get away.
There is a gap in my schedule long enough to get away for a couple of days but only if I my partner is allowed leave for the last couple of days of term (17/18 dec). The school is an academy if this matters.
anyone go experience of a similar situation? parents seem to do this all the time but I get the feeling they would look very dimly on teachers doing the same thing.

Notice is all important as well as a good rationale and business case.
You may have the right of appeal too.
Experience.
This week I've had governors at a school over turn a head decision and I'm waiting for another appeal tomorrow.
Both were for holidays one a trip of a life time booked by the couples daughter and the other a close family wedding.
In all honesty you don't seem to have much chance, but good luck

Unlikely in the extreme.
We might get a lot of holidays but only at the same time as the kids!
I've effectively given up going to Le Mans to be a teacher which is a bit gutting. The only time I've ever been granted leave (unpaid) was a single day for my best friends wedding (who gets married on a Monday, seriously!) and that was only because I was best man. Had to jump through a lot of hoops for it too.

I work in a school and I'm always amazed at the number of staff absences we have every day. Either "ill" or on a training course, a PPA day, at a conference or meeting. At a guess at least 5% of classroom staff are off every day. We actually have two permanent "cover" teachers and a bank of TA's.
Every morning at briefing our HR manager reads out a list of whos off and who is covering their post for the day. Usually the longest bit of the meeting!
I manage my own timetable and only teach two days a week so I can juggle things about but is it really that difficult to get a day off!?

I'm another governor - again our response would be no way unless it's a truly exceptional circumstance.
It's a line management decision solely for the head/SMT only really, however our head has tried to pass the buck onto us as a governing body few times though she already knows what the answer will be.
As mentioned above, many schools find it virtually impossible to hit the attendance targets so teachers and management really should lead by example.
That said we are a small school with 180 pupils - in a big secondary there should be enough free teachers to cover (I would hope) It will then come down to their policies - ours are very clear on the matter though.

I'd like to clear something up with the knowing what you signed up for thing...I'm not a teacher, my partner is.
I was wanting to do it as a surprise break but obviously this seems like an impossibility. I couldn't exactly ask her about the possibilities and keep it a surprise.
yes... but when she became your partner and you start planning holidays together, you have to take that into account, hence you signed up for it.I was wanting to do it as a surprise break but obviously this seems like an impossibility. My wife used to be a pharmacist and had to plan her holiday (which could only be booked in full week blocks) a year ahead, so sometimes we knew when we'd need to take a holiday 18 months ahead - and little chance of changing that. I know that is a different situation, but is another example of where ones partner/wife/husband/whatever job influences your flexibility on holidays etc.

Absolutely ! This is an operational or day to day matter for the head to decide not a strategic issue that governors should get involved in. If the head is trying to avoid making an unpopular decision its not for the governing body to step in and be the bad guy As mentioned above, many schools find it virtually impossible to hit the attendance targets so teachers and management really should lead by example.
