Buying classic 911 advice plse!
Discussion
I have been trying to find a good early 911 for some time and struggled to find anything that fitted the bill. I was ideally looking for a 1973 911S RHD but its been a real struggle.
Today 2 cars popped up, not totally the criteria but super interesting and I am thinking of going for one of them. Im after some advice though as to what is the best car to go for.
Car 1 - 1972 911E 2.4 with 72k miles. Totally original, no renovation.
Car 2 - 1971 911S 2.2 with 112k miles and has recently gone through some renovation
Car 2 is 30% more price wise than car 1
What should I do?

are you on DDK ?
To be honest, with early cars you can't just put up to descriptions and get any useful advise back. ALL early cars are different and even 2 seemingly comparable cars will have differences
It will depend on a huge amount of details , bodywork condition , quality of resto, originality, missing parts , incorrect parts , matching numbers etc etc
Only way to really tell which is the best buy is no physically look at the cars and assess them or if not confident use the help & advise from a forum like DDK . I'm happy to have a quick scan over any photos you might have of each car to see if there is anything obvious
saying that .... all things being equal ( which they never are ) , an unrestored car could be better as recent shiney paint jobs ( especially from the US ) can be hiding sins unless its a well documented resto from someone who knows what they are doing
In this case, the 2.2S is the more desirable car and the S motors are fantastic fun 8) I'd probo be looking more seriously at the 2.2S although if it turns out not quite to be as good as you think, the 2.4E is also a fantastic car and from experience there is very little on the road between a 2.4E & a 2.4S ( the S just has the little bit of extra sparkle

I had a 2.2s, great car, but 2.4e is a cracker too and probably the nicer day to day drive. Buy on condition and history and get an expert to look at it. An original 2.4e, matching numbers etc, is a great place to start but it will need work no matter how cherished and that can be frighteningly expensive. Having had both restored cars (to as new almost) and original I would always favour the latter. Knowing what has been done, and how well, is a huge issue with restored cars - some are great, others surprisingly poor. Better to get the work done yourself by people you trust.
DDK is the place to seek advice - but still tread carefully and take nowt at face value.
Edited to add: mind you that S is in THE best colour for any early 911 IMO. Lovely. Albeit non original for that car.

Would have thought this is worth a look on the same day.

Resurrecting this thread a little - I'm also looking for an early 911 but at a much lower price point. There is a Gemini blue 1973 911T at Border Reivers that looks lovely - but has been there since Feb I think. Any thoughts - is it price or something else which has stopped it from selling? Also - what are the opinions on lhd/rhd on early 911s - is the rhd premium worth it?

Another PHer was buying a 3.2 Carrera from them and it turned out to be hiding rust. Just ensure you get it independently inspected by an early Porsche expert.Vimal

I agree on the price - v expensive for a t. Wondering if there might be flexibility as it's been there for so long - but first want to see if anyone knows why it hasn't sold.
I've driven a t - but pre mfi - a few years ago but ended up buying a 3.2 as a good one came up. I still want the t hence the search. I liked the driving experience. This will be to use mainly around London so lack of power not an issue and not too worried about investment value.
