Press and hold down the left scroll wheel and turn on the ignition, after about 5 to 10 sec engineering mode come up.
Then just scroll though the menu.

Lucky I was outside a halfords when it didn't start, he checked the battery and was showing good at 12v? Ended up just disconnecting it for 10mins and seems to have cleared fault and starts now
Hmm - do you have a very early car? Those didn't have battery life in the menu.
If its less than 12V when it starts its obviously low. Rising to 14v just reflects that your alternator is working (hard) to try and charge it.
If your battery is more than 3yrs old it would be the primary suspect. Your error message is likely to be spurious due to low system voltage.

Yeah it's an old 07 reg I think. not had no trouble with it until I put it in to have the alloys stripped and powder coated earlier this week. Maybe they left the keys in and drained the battery. think I'll change the battery as you said can't hurt to try
I believe there is a BCM update for the older cars too which changes the way that the car allows the battery to discharge and charge back up again. Might be worth asking MF/WP or where ever you have the car serviced if they can check considering you have an 07 plate car.

But then, still change the battery. See FAQ's for the correct one, as it does matter. Bosch silver line from memory is one of the correct ones.

I contributed to the thread in that link and then thought my ECM was upgraded; but I don't think it was. My battery charging has done some strgae things like; 82% charge, drive for 46 miles in my hour commute on main roads and when I turn off and check the charge its still 82%. Do that for a week and eventually is jumps to 100%.See comments from ringram in thread below:
