Valvetrain issues? Anyone know exactly what the fault is?

That guy later stated that this was spread across a fleet of ring cars.

Not sure if he was extracting the wee wee.

First heard of this back in January - guess this also gives merit to the rumours of non disclosure agreements.

You are correct about non disclosure.

That isn't a plague. If it keeps Internet chatter going from the people who would never buy one, fair enough.
You have no idea who is going to (or planning to) buy one at all. The whole point of discussion forums is for like-minded individuals to converse about the cars they are interested in. If there are engine failures and replacements being performed then as individuals interested in the marque we have, I would guess, a right to know so that we can make informed opinions about the cars and the Marque we love and enjoy.

I am thinking about buying one and I want to know all about these issues so that I can make an informed decision.

The problem for me is these cars are not having the mileage put on them by their owners so the issues encountered so far are not a true representation of the scale of the problem, if indeed there is a problem with the engine at all.

We cant really make an informed decision on this issue until we start seeing cars with higher mileages so until then, there is no point saying there IS NOT an issue as we don't know......yet! All we DO know is the engines were replaced when they were new and now some replacement engines are being replaced due to another (possibly related) issue. Surely you can understand that this would cause concern for a potential buyer.

That's fair. However, I can understand that 991 GT3 owners will want to play it down - rather they should be grateful these issues are being aired. Most cars have relatively low mileage i.e less than 10k so it is too early to conclude it is not an issue.

If what DMC2 said is indeed correct then it's not that the owners want to play it down, they're simply not allowed to talk about the issues.

Good point. Also as some of the cars mentioned are used at the Ring it does indicate hard use can cause issues. Could prove very expensive once cars are out of manufacturers warranty.

So in summary if your GT3 engine doesn't blow you haven't been spanking it like you should have been and would have been better off buying a standard 991!

So the bottom of the engine had an issue and now if you drive it hard the top of the engine has an issue. The bit in the middle is ok. So far. I'm guessing the 9000rpm limit used a lot might be the issue here if it is the valve train.

Imagine if it was a manual gearbox, Porsche will be claiming you over revv'd it ...

Laughable.

Bring back the Mezger.

Hard use confused being a technofest and Auto, I fail to see how this can be the case. The car has software controlling every aspect and I'm fairly certain it is impossible to overcome the limits Porsche have programmed. If it was an older manual car I can see your point but the 991GT3 doesn't allow you to be overly silly in terms of jeopardising reliability.
I'm sure Porsche spent years testing in all conditions including test beds, simulating say high load and high RPM for sustained periods.
The problem with the engine is it is a compromise in design due to standardised production platform across the Porsche range. To all intents and purposes, there is not a great deal to differentiate the Boxster engine to the GT3 engine in comparison to say the previous Gen boxster and the previous Gen GT3 engines. I dug out the 9A1 production engine diagrams before to high-light the differences.

Not enough obviously to already have the owners test the initial cars and then discover a fault so every engine had to be replaced. Now this, which is showing first in the most hard driven cars. What's to say for 2nd or 3rd owners that they will get the same with gently driven cars at 40 to 60 000 miles? Will they get replacement engines then or will it be £12k?

This Porsche knows what they are doing got a big dent with the 996/997 issues. Now more.

How are 2nd hand GT3 prices at the moment ? biggrin Sell sell sell .....
