Offshore Careers

Hi guys i am after a bit advice from anyone that works offshore on oil rigs or wind farms. It has always been a dream of mine to eventually work on the rigs and i now feel that i am ready to make the jump while im young with no ties. Im 22 and a time served mechanical engineer with NVQ level 3 and HNC whilst working within the aerospace industry.

All of the engineer jobs that i am looking at online seem to require drilling experience ect which i obviously dont have unless a pillar drill or hand drill counts haha. Does anybody know of any good agencies other than the top couple on google search's or anybody have advice as to a route to get a career on the rigs as a engineer.

Do you have experience of aero 'engines' Rb 211, ge etc engines are used a lot offshore, and on onshore plants, to run compressors, auxiliary powered etc, its a real well paid area with a huge skill shortage, I was with an old friend on Tuesday who has just come out of retirement after 5years and 72years old because he was head hunted by an old employer who couldn't find experienced employees

Good luck; the vast majority of companies operating in O&G are in the throws of releasing vast numbers of staff and contractors from their projects; the industry is not in great shape at the moment.

This. Wouldn't put all your eggs in the oil & gas basket at the moment.

yes I'd agree with that, but a lot are front end exploration, I've just been told that my contract will be extended, when it expires next year, depends a lot on what skill group your in. Start looking now for the upturn.
