Juust having a browse and found. Ref VP CMEas being at 0ft in Sawbridgeworth some distance from Stanstead.
Any idea what the problem could be?
It's because the aircraft has landed at Stansted but the transponder hasn't been switched off. Any idea what the problem could be?
As it's an old 767 200, the position on plane finder or flight radar comes from the aircraft's transponder which is giving a position linked to an older inertial navigation system (not GPS). This system uses laser gyroscopes and 'drift's with the earths rotation when left on when on the ground. On take off, the gyro resets itself to the known position on the runway so it works OK.
The info on flight radar / plane finder is only as good as the aircraft transponder information and the people's receivers that feed the data to the website. Some people have big aerials and advanced equipment on good positions, others just use a laptop and little usb receivers similar to digital TV receivers you could buy in Argos.
