I picked up a nasty windscreen smash yesterday, stone at motorway speed has made a bullet sized hole in the screen, this morning I take out my insurance docs to get the ball rolling for a replacement. I was planning on getting it replaced by someone who knows the issues with these screens (creaking), and was going to hunt down 'Glassman' on here who seems to know his onions by all accounts. However I just checked the excess payments and cover and it says £75 excess if replaced by Autoglass but if I use another company the maximum they will pay is £125. I guess my question is 2 fold, should I use autoglass, watch like a hawk and get them back if there's any issues or do I go the alternative route and pay out a wedge (assuming a OEM screen is a fair few £'s)?

Advice please.

A friend of mine had his front screen replaced a few months ago. He has a lovely 993 and is quite particular. I think he used an OPC.

I saw it afterwards and he explained that he wanted to check the lower corners were rust free when it was removed, which they were, and apparently they now fit a special tape (Kevlar?) around the frame to prevent 'creaking'.

same here, just paid out in full for one myself, did not want autoglass and a pattern part.

will check future insurance renewal as will not be using admiral in the future as they don't allow you to Say OEM parts on cars over 3 years and will fit cheap st.

...okay call to Autoglass, they will supply OE glass which is good, first hurdle over. I explained I wanted it just so, no creaking etc, they confirmed that all works are guaranteed for life of my ownership and if I'm not happy they will replace until I am. Lets see what happens...

I had National Windscreens fit a new windscreen at an indy as the car was there.

The fitter was more than happy for the indy to er... 'advise'.

Are you sure it is not that you need to pay an excess of £125 and not that it is the max the insurance comp will pay out? I know with classicline that is the way they work. You choose the fitter but you need to pay £125 excess instead of the £75 if they organise the replacement.

Watch them like a hawk .... Seriously. There are good and there are very bad fitters out there and the 993 screen can be a right pain by all accounts.

Check very very carefully they do not damage the VIN plate on the nearside corner. In fact point it out to them before they start. Very easy to scratch.

...and make sure they fit the anti-creak insulation tape before the screen.

The tape is not needed if the screen is fitted correctly.

...The black_mamba windscreen saga has just concluded, nearly 2 months after the original damage! In all I had 6 visits from the insurance companies preferred supplier with either damaged glass, wrong trim, no trim or just not turning up at all! In the end got sick and tired of it, called insurance and they said use my own supplier, one call to Glassman on here, one long day of: assessment, difficult removal, shock of previous bad install (seriously pants but not going to go into detail here), a lot of prep, 4 cups of tea and I'm now a happy chappie again. thank you Paul.

PS no tape used.

Seems between here & 911 UK Paul is THE man to usesmile

No affiliation, just a good friend was very happy with his work, & Paul was incredibly helpful when I had issues on a non 993.
