Bizarre helicopter crash into Irish pub

Morning all.
On the Sky website there's footage of a pretty large helicopter trying to land on a strip of lawn between a canal and a pub in Ireland. Unsurprisingly it goes badly and the chopper hits something and flips.
Now, bearing in mind that helicopters can be fairly dangerous things, can someone explain to me why the pilot thought he could put the thing down there? Sees to me like something that should be covered in flight training i.e. don't try to land on a space the size of a double bed surrounded by people, water and steel poles.

Hopefully they will rip up his license for good.
That angle looks so much worse! If he wasn't doing an emergency landing out of necessity he must be absolutely barking mad to try and land there!

t people do in cars, despite it being covered in driving training?He did well to get it in between those lamp posts I think!
What was the sequence of events there? His main rotor seems to snag something and send the whole lot spinning, but I can't make out what? The pub wall maybe, but he doesn't seem to be getting any closer at that point. Snagged the flag perhaps?

I've seen the video and photos.
To try and land there in any helicopter defies belief.
A pilot has a huge duty of care and responsibility. You can make a risk assessment on that site in the blink of an eye - there are multiple serious hazards.
I would say that was criminal endangerment to life and I hope he gets prosecuted.

That photo makes it look even tighter than the video did, I hadn't appreciated he was trying to slot it in between lamp posts from the video. 10.5m rotor diameter on a gazelle, anyone want to estimate the lamp post spacing?
My favourite bit of the article is the "someone moved one of the pub garden wooden tables a bit to make room for the helicopter"!! As if that was going to help ;-)
TBH, if he were any good as a pilot he could have just hovered above the tables whilst the pub staff brought his pint and packet of crisps out to him..........
