I'm a big fat fatty and I have decided to do a bit of running. Its not too bad, in fact I might be enjoying it a bit.

My concern is that for about 5 min after stoping I cough like crazy, is this normal? Will it stop?

Am I doing something wrong?

When you run, are you really pushing hard and struggling to catch your breath? If so, it might be better to slow things down a little until you get a bit fitter. Aim for an effort level where you can still hold a conversation.

The only time I get some coughs after running is when I have pushed myself "too hard" when trying to beat my personal best time on a 5km run.

I have often had this after starting some exercise for the first time in ages ( like a 5 a side football game after a ten year break). Clears up after the first couple of weeks / sessions, and just feels like "de coking" to me. A few good coughs and the odd spit and the webers clear.

I had this. Doc made me do a breath test which revealed mild asthma.

He put me on a prevantative inhaler which, if I rememeber to take the fker, works rather well.

I started to get this in my late twenties.

This also happened to me some years ago when I was very out of shape, didn't really exercise and ate very poorly (the joys of youth, eh!) I coughed like there was no tomorrow after an extremely intense and unprepared for session on the velodrome.

These days I exercise regularly and eat well, and it is not a problem at all. So worth getting checked out but you may find that as long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle it isn't an issue.

I still don't know what caused it for me as I didn't check, but it was nearly a decade ago and I'm still here, so I'm not too worried! biggrin
