I dug my cheapy Heart Rate Monitor out as some lads at work were going on about it, I wore it for a bit whilst watching telly and it went down to 50 and seems to go between 53 and 63 whilst at rest and typical is say 57.

Which puts me on the charts at Excellent/Athlete, go me, the 44 year old 16 1/2 stone "Athlete" biggrin

Go on, lets hear from those whose drop into the 30s.

About 10 years ago, when I weighed 9.5 stone and ran 70 + miles a week I used to be around the sub-50 mark.

10 years on, 5 stone heavier, doing the occasional run as I've entered a 10k end of August, I'm around 65-70bpm. Not bad as I'm really not in any way fit.

Despite doing a ridiculous amount of various high energy sports throughout the week, my resting heart rate has always been 70-80. confused Maybe it was 100 before I started tennis?

I know my cardiovascular fitness has improved dramatically as I used to struggle to run around a court before but now I'm fine. Even the judge agrees.

Mine is around 75, when I was going to the pub 7 days a week it was 90, my doctor said it's fine and come back if it's below 60 or above 100 as that's dangerous.

41, 16.5 stone - not doing LOADS of cardio but plenty of weights - still never see resting HR much over very low 40's.

Last year I had a knee op and resting HR was high 30's before they gave me any "go to sleep drugs" - they had to note it in bold in case the people in charge of making sure I woke up thought I was dying lol.

I've always put it down to being so big (6ft6) - just assumed my heart figured it was easy to do less big pumps....not very science based i know!

I'm 51, 13.5 stone and cycle a bit (once or twice a week at 50miles) I use a Garmin HRM and also have a smartwatch and a Galaxy S6. All three seem to agree that my resting heartrate is around 38. I'm hardly an athelete and couldn't run to catch a bus!

Maybe I need to do less cardio? I do enough weights as it is? Maybe I need to grow taller?

I'm 40, probably about two stone overweight but I do excercise regularly 2-3 times a week and also walk a lot, my resting heart rate; according to my Fitbit Charge HR is low to mid 60's, which; according to various charts is "excellent" I'm amazed at some of the figures on here that are in their 30's, is that even possible?

In general the fitter you are the lower your resting heart rate, but there are large variances from one person to the next. Similar to the estimation of maximum heart rate based on 220 minus your age; it's an approximation and can vary significantly. Genetics and all that.

Mine is low 40s. I cycle 3-4 times a week but don't know what my resting heart rate was before I got into it.

Must be. I do about 5-8 hours of cardio a week in the form of running around a court plus 4-6 hours of weight work. I also practice tai chi and meditation. I am so chilled out that I happily cruise along at 30 in a 30 zone... and 20 in a 20 zone... generally listening to prog trance. I really enjoy my job. Life couldn't be better. smokin Lowest I've seen my heart rate is maybe 72! Can't imagine how high it'd be if I were stressed, in a st job, overweight and didn't do any exercise. nuts

53yr old, 6'1"/ 101kg/ 12% bodyfat here resting mid 60s, but very little cardio.

It was higher (80s) before last 3 months of slowly getting back into the gym (after a 20 year break) and eating better. Now the rate has dropped and recovery time is significantly improved as well.

The intention is to start doing some more cardio so I'll keep an eye on things and see if improves.

Unless you are very active having a low RHR is not always a good thing.

I regularly swim a lot and mine is about 53.

You need to do it first thing in the morning when lying down to get the best possible figure.

Had exactly this a few years ago. RHR 42 & notes all over the place to let the docs & anesthetist know so they didn't think I was going into arrest.

Last I was checked (whilst doing someones study for them where I had to lift heavy weights and then lie on a bed for the rest of the day while they took small blood samples, blood pressure and HR every hour) I was dipping into the high 30's, 38-39 bpm. That was a while ago though! Where I manage to do a boat load of swimming and break dancing on a student diet!

I may check it in the morning. I bet its a lot higher now.

Mine is 55-60

Its been that all my life from memory! Always been active and fit (well not as a student or early 20s)

Last 2-3 years upped the fitness and cardio and body feel great, cardio is in a different league to what it was say 10 years ago, so much better, resting heart beat hasn't changed at all , maybe even a beat or two quicker!

Recovery after strenuous exercise/intervals has though, heart rate drops a lot quicker than it used to.

I used to think i was super fit as my heart rate at rest was around 40bpm, but when i was in my mid thirties i had to have an ECG as part of a work related medical and discovered i had a congenital right bundle branch block, which is not particularly rare, but brachycardia is a symptom, which is a slow heart rate!
