Mio Velo heart rate wrist band
Discussion
I too dislike chest straps - even the soft Garmin one. I just don't like the feeling of them.
I've been using a Mio Link for 9 months and really like it. You need to wear it an inch higher than a watch to get a good signal, but once there it will stay place and give a good consistent signal for the duration of your ride. I don't know how long the battery lasts but it's at least 8 hours. I re-charge after every ride.

I tried a number of HR monitors after my heart attack, I have a very small wrist and struggled to find one that fitted. The fit does appear to be critical, if you think how they work; using an optical sensor to detect the pulsing flow then you can see why fit is important.
I have had to go back to a chest strap and that is 100% reliable although I do have to use the Lectron II conductivity gel. I have got used to it and don't notice it now although the gel is a bit of a faff!!
So just be aware that you might have to try a couple of different makes of wrist sensor to find one that suits you, and try different positions as well, I am sorry if this all sounds a bit vague and unhelpful but the wrist sensors do vary and one make that suits someone else may not work for you!
