Channel 4 tonight, should be interesting:

"In 1984 a 19-year-old car mechanic in Arkansas crashed his truck and went into a coma. His name was Terry Wallis and he had recently had a daughter called Amber. Terry's mother refused to believe he wouldn't emerge from his vegetative state, so she treated him normally - talking to him, taking him on family trips. Then in 2003, against all known medical odds, he woke up. But - and it's a big but - he still thinks he's 19, and he can't store new experiences, so however many times Amber tells him who she is, he never gets it. It's a haunting predicament for his heroic family, as is the case of Roy King, another car-crash victim featured, who is physically fine but has effectively lost the ability to love. If ever there was an advert for having multiple airbags in your car, this programme is it."

Watching this now.

He married a 15 year old before he had his accident at 19 years old..OMG! Do they have different laws out there allowing you to marry minors?

Funny chaps those Yanks.

Quite sad to see really, poor chap doesn't seem able to do much for himself. I do wonder what quality of life he has. But then, it's only 5 minutes in, so I suppose he could get better as this moves on in time.

He didn't exactly "sleep", more a vegetable state. I'm sure anyone else would have cared for him for 19 years if he had the appearance of a severly disabled man.

Still amazing that he suddenly started to communicate again.

Pretty amazing how his brain carried on trying to switch back on after all those years. I'm not sure what was more shocking though. How poorly he still is, or how close to brain injury the average occupant of the deep south seems to be.

It made me think about the lack of airbags in my Tiv. Not for me, particularly, but I often drive the kids to various places. (They prefer the Tiv to the Beemer).

watched that.. sorry dont agree. yes its amazing after 19 years he had come out of his coma, but what standard of life will he have ?
selfish if you ask me... kept alive for all the wrong reasons. The guy is stuck 20 years ago, he will never join the modern day, and will never remember his daughter for more than a few moments.

If that happens to me, turn the machine off
