Can anyone tell me how much of a gap there should be between the pad and the disk? Or put another way, should the pad be touching the disk firmly enough to make a rubbing noise when rotating the hub by hand (i.e. front wheel removed)? The reason I ask is that I sometimes notice a noise that I thought might be a worn bearing when the car is cold, so I was investigating. I don't think the pad/disk is actually causing that noise, but it still bothered me.

I've tried the bible but I think it assumes a bit more general knowledge about brakes than I've got - last time I worked on any brakes they were drums.

I also noticed that there is a mm of play in the disk with the wheel removed.

May well be nothing but I'd appreciate any help

Thanks

PS Anyone who has so far ignored the postings about Waxoyling the outriggers, be warned. I've now discovered that mine are basically bare metal (with a nice coating of surface rust now), despite the car being garaged by the previous owner until I had it about 18 months ago. Out with the wire brush and the hammerite .

That's normal. The pad should gently rest against the disc all the time and will make a slight running noise as you turn the hub. The disc is clamped by the wheel and will be loose (but held captive by the caliper) when you take the wheel off. (Sometimes the disc will wedge itself onto the hub but will come loose when tapped gently.)

Many thanks - I'll continue my noise hunt somewhere else.
