Apparently it's not in the best of states and urgently requires funding to enhance preservation.

I'm sure NASA has the means to scrape some money together to preserve it. That's probably the cost of 1 bolt in their space programme.

It's not owned by NASA - and they have to watch their pennies like any government agency these days.

It's now owned by the National Air and Space Museum and I think this is a novel way of raising funds for a project.

I know that, you would imagine that they wouldn't want to see it deteriorate to nothing though.

Not sure if you're being serious about government agencies watching their pennies though hehe

Well, NASA have been struggling for decades.

The NASM is essentially a charity (with some federal support) so any novel way of raising funds is a good idea.
