Where to find summer work?

Hello everyone, after a quick trawl of the net and various job search websites coming up with nothing, can anyone advise me as to the best way to find a summer job, in the office>menial>filing and making tea and answering phones line, or has this all been subcontracted to Bangalore by now? I'd be grateful for your advice!
When I was a soap dodger, I used to work delivering at pizza hut during the summer. Thought it was the best job ever. Got to drive my own car round, didn't have to get out of bed early, only worked 5/6 hour shifts, free pizza and probably worked out to about £9/£10 per hour as you get hourly rate, then money per delivery and tips. Also get paid weekly.
Not the greatest thing to have on your cv and wouldnt do it in an area where i thought i would get mugged, but better than counting paperclips.

Loads of options out there if you look hard enough.
If you are at a Uni then the liklyhood is that they will want casual staff (cleaners/porters/bar/catering) to assist with conference trade over the summer.
Theme Parks/Leisure attractions. Varied but dealing with the public every day.
Temp agencies.

That actually sounds like quite a good summer job. Did you just go into Pizza Hut and fill out the standard job application?
I would like to do a job involving driving rather than standing around in a restaurant again!

Hahaha - i think the 'pathetically lazy student' only counts in geography lessons. I work at an events centre at the moment, but can never get enough work, especially behind the bar which i enjoy. I might have to investigate the pizza hut thing, sounds ok!
Rick, I spent a whole summer doing temporary bar work once. Because I had the experience and was flexible they were happy to draft me in to all sorts of places. Personnally bar work is not my favourite occupation but really appreciated the variety of locations and people I met.
OTOH, it wasn't as good as the time I spent the whole summer parking cars...
Edited to say: I loath silver service and specifically requested that I only wanted to do bar work. More than a couple of times the clients tried to rope me into it "on the job" but a firm refusal tended to do the trick.

Have you thought of combining earning money with travelling? I worked on Camp America programme for couple of Summers in my student days, fantastic! They pay for you to get to USA, you work on camp for 6-8 weeks then have upto 3 mths off to travel before they fly you back again. Google Camp America &/or BUNAC for more info.

i did this too. in fact - i was at skag hut for 3+ years. toward the end of my degree i was working friday 5-9 and sunday 5-11 and still taking home over 100 quid a week. thats not bad for virtually zero effort. if i really pushed myself (rarely) i could make 300 a week in the bank (and in tips) just for driving around.
its not all smiles and sunshine, i was mugged and you have to deal with idiots (the customers, rather than your coworkers) and there is a critical decision you have to make. work in an area where people have money and you wont get mugged. however, you also wont get tips and the same people are likely to look down on you and be arrogant and rude. work in a rougher area and you may get more grief from scrotes but people are friendlier at the door and generally tip more. up to you really.
