Within the first couple of years they can bin you for little reason anyway, so I wouldn't be voicing any words such as 'unfair' to the employer.

Another way of addressing the other side of the equation is telling them that you very much enjoy working there and would like to know what the prospects are after the next few weeks, i.e. is there some work in the pipeline that you can move on to?

If it's a software project then slap a few subtle bugs in now that will ensure you'll be maintaining it until after the year is out
