from my gp? I have no symptoms of anything. I was watching trust me I'm a doctor earlier on telly and it was about cholesterol. Obviously mine could be sky high and I wouldn't know; if it is high you can take steps to reduce it to stop heart problems when you're older.

Call your local GP clinic and ask? If I remember correctly, the last time I had one I booked it through the receptionist without having to be referred by my GP.

Failing that, you can buy home cholesterol test kits, but obvs these won't be as accurate.

Why not just ask your GP?

If you are over 40 or have a strong family history of heart disease they would gladly do it. Otherwise they should have a chat about your concerns and will likely offer a fasting cholesterol test.

Otherwise you could just get one done privately. You don't need to "demand" anything...

Well, I wouldn't go in demanding one...

Get one of those kits first. If your cholesterol is high, then call your local health centre.

I went to the Doctors about 2 years ago and asked for a cholesterol test. He asked why I wanted 1, I just told him ''I had never been tested and we were all being advised to know our cholesterol.'' Sent for a blood test waited about a week and call the surgery for the results. Turned out I was all ok.

If you can why not ask to have a full blood test?

Don't get your blood tested at Boots etc, you have to pay and they just want to flog you cholesterol lowering pills, which is exactly what they tried with my Mother.

You can get one done at Lloyds pharmacy. Costs about £20 IIRC

You can demand anything you fancy.... do it loudly enough and they will probably give it to you as well......... whether it is appropriate or necessary is another question entirely.

Yeah, the Japanese have some of the highest cholesterol levels in the world. They also live the longest go figure. It's also a fact here that people with high cholesterol levels live the longest. Good cholesterol, both saturated and non saturated are great for you, anything non natural steer clear of.

I eat loads of natural fats that contain loads of the stuff as my brain (which is fat and cholesterol) and body loves it. If I was worried about weather my arteries are becoming blocked up I'd be more interested in weather I was insulin resistant or not. Especially if I ate a high carbohydrate diet.

Yes I'll get shot down for this post, but have a look around you. Heart disease is increasing massively, so is diabetes at an alarming rate. We have been told since i belive the 80's? To keep cholesterol low, avoid fats and eat lots of wholegrain. Look at photos of the 60/70's when people did pretty much the opposite. Not many fatties about then was there?

There was never any real proof to start with that a low fat high carbohydrate diet was good for us, what was true though is that it's a hell of a lot cheaper to feed the world grains then it is to feed us meat...

I think its red meat thats bad, innit. My main problem is I eat too much sugar (sweets). So I'll probably get diabetes while I'm on about cholesterol lol. I'm booked in too see doc next wed. Can't see nurse until doc orders the blood test apparently. I'll have to tell em both grandads died of heart attack to make sure I get the test.

I'll report back when I get results.

ps don't understand the head injury post above.

This makes interesting reading

I make no comment on how accurate it is as I'm no expert.

Two things IMO. Firstly, ask at your GP surgery for a "well-person" test. It's with the nurse, they test your blood, urine, take your pulse and bp, etc and a week later will tell you your cholesterol amongst several other things. It's free and your GP surgery should gladly book you in.

Secondly, red meat isn't bad for you. In fact, very little is "bad" for you. Even sugar has its place. What counts is your overall consumption of everything and your level of exercise, current health, rest, job, stress, and many other things. Things become bad when you consume more or less than you should over a sustained period. Simply saying red meat is causing my cholesterol to go through the roof is not correct. It needs to be taken in context with everything else you're doing (or not doing).

Sorry! No idea why, but I misread cholesterol as testosterone. As you were, continue to ignore.

results are in I've got high cholesterol: 6.0 when should be below 5.0. (Although according to nhs over 50% of adults in uk have as of 2011 so I'm not panicking). My bad cholesterol LDL is 3.9 should be below 3.0. My TC:HDL ratio is 5.0 - should be below 4.

I don't drink or smoke so the things left for me to do to reduce cholesterol are start exercising daily (currently don't do any!) and change my diet - more veg, less saturated fat / dairy / sugar.

For anyone reading this who's interested you should be tested every 5 years if you are between the ages of 40 and 75. Or more often etc if you have other risk factors.

So just out of interest, how exactly did you benefit from the test - Presumably you already knew you ate a poor diet and didn't exercise enough?

err its better to know now and make changes before my arteries clog up. Btw if I have a stroke or heart attack it would cost a lot more than the test.

Typical reading for UK male. Google Qrisk and enter all your data to get a guesstimate as to the implications for your risk of stroke and heart attack and how that compares with your peers.
But I would not worry. You can improve your profile through losing extra weight, exercising and eating well but treat your body not the blood results wink
