Hello everyone

Just aquired the 98 sport that was listed on ph for sale last week. I bought it with no mot and its been standing for a while. I'm pleased to say its all running now and has a fresh new mot certificate. Got a minor problem. When the car is warm i get a rough bearing/ gear chatter noise at low revs in pretty much all gears. A little worried about the oil level and that will get changed this evening, i've thought it could also be a worn uj? any experience please.

Hello there!

What part of the country are you in?

Can't help much with the transmission noise, I'm afraid, except to guess at the needle roller bearing?

Looks like the box will have to come out regardless.

Also does the noise go away when the clutch is in, ie thrust bearing ?

i'm in leicester

changed gearbox oil tonight, and i've still got the noise. its only at low revs and its in all gears, its silent when clutch is in. Only does it under load. I've also inspected the drive shafts and there's a little free play. higher speeds are silent. very odd!

Spoke to porsche specialist in oxford today may have to go see for an opinion.

Apparently the sports gearbox mount is metal to metal. The noise i'm hearing is normal resonance ampified through the chassis!

You gtr guys have the civilised version! I'll live with the noise, i've heard straight cut gearboxes that sound so unbelievably rough you cant believe its normal.

Also re refilling the gearbox, i was told by the factory to fill it from the highest point. I first tried to remove the venting pipe in order to avoid splitting the gasket between the blanking plate. If i had been succesfull the nut on the inside would have dropped in the box! All done now.

Yeah my Sport makes all kind of mechanical gearbox noises, glad to hear this is possibly due to metal to metal mount.
