Just fact finding at this stage on any requirements relating to running a prize competition for a relatively low value item (approx £150 - £300).

I am initially wondering if it is possible to specify a competition end when a minimum number of tickets is sold rather than a closing date ? The minimum ticket sale would be set to cover the cost of the prize and administering the competition (mail forwarding address) and then a little profit on top.

Is another option to have a closing date but if the minimum ticket sale is not met then the winner gets the accumulated entry money rather than the prize.

Minimum ticket sales is a bad idea IMO as a set closing date must surely be more appealing to potential entrants. I guess i'm trying to limit potential liability for loss whilst just testing the water.

I'm familiar with the guidance on the gambling commission website so it will have a free postal entry option in addition to paid entry. This should then comply with the guidance to avoid being a lottery which requires a licence (happy to be corrected).

Google has lots listed but can anyone recommend a good, cheap mail forwarding company.

Is anyone aware of any useful resources for competition terms and conditions ?

Any comments welcome as usual before I put another half baked idea to bed.

There was a family round my way a few years ago that tried to do what you're suggesting only with a slightly bigger prize. It was the pub they owned, I might even have had a go myself.

I think eventually the draw didn't happen as they didn't get enough entries, so ended up with a winner getting the entry fees that had been paid and they still have the pub.

Here's a newspaper article from the time it happened.

Here's their website if you feel like contacting them for further details. the competition webpage in the article is dead now.
